Bordeaux superieur (Fronsac, Right bank)

Organic farming

Located in Mouillac, near Fronsac, the vineyard of Château Grand Village dates back to the 1600s and has been owned by the Guinaudeau family. Baptiste and his wife Julie are, in a word, devoted to their property, a fully operational farm with pastures and forests of which only the most promising, well-exposed parcels are planted with vines. The vineyard is planted on plateau and hillside plots that boast a clay-limestone terroir very similar to that of Saint-Émilion.

To ensure they are doing this beautiful patch of Grand Village terroir justice, Baptiste and Julie entrust their team from Lafleur with the vineyard and cellar work. As a result, the methodology of vineyard management, winemaking and vinification carried out at Grand Village is quite exceptional for a mere AOC Bordeaux wine.

Everything in the vineyard is done by hand, from pruning to harvesting, to allow the best expression of this land. The soil is tilled manually, without the use of chemical herbicides; pruning and de-budding are tailored according to the age and shape of each vine; hedging leaf and crop thinning are adapted to the climate conditions of each vintage. Harvest dates are determined parcel by parcel, in order to pick the grapes, by hand, only when they have reached optimal maturity. we did mention devotion, didn't we?!

After a meticulous sorting, the grapes are vinified, again parcel by parcel, in small tanks. Fermentation takes place over 15-20 days; the wine is then transferred to oak barrels for 12 months of aging.

Grand Village wines are without artifice, expressive of this privileged clay-limestone terroir, evolving each year to reflect the particular characteristics of the vintage. Harmonious and subtle, Grand Village red is just so enjoyable in its rich fruit-forward youth, but a few years of cellaring are well-rewarded.

Jancis Robinson: "What I appreciate particularly about the Guinaudeaus is that, most unusually for Bordeaux, they have an almost Burgundian ethos of care and personal attention in the way they run the property. The family personally works the vineyards and seems to know practically every vine."
