Cidrerie du Leguer is based in Brittany, six hours drive directly west of Paris – so far west, the next step is the Atlantic Ocean. Here Cedric Le Bloas and his team craft artisanal ciders in very cool (ice cold) climate, farming a small 6 hectares of certified organic apple and pear trees. CIDRERIE DU LEGUER Britany Organic certified Who says great French ciders must come from Normandy?! Not us! A Brittany native, Cedric completed his agriculture studies and travelled around the country and beyond, before stumbling upon what would become the Ciderie du Leguer. After restoring the orchard, 2016 saw the first vintage. Since then it’s been a labour of love and hard work – as Cedric and the team take it up on themselves meticulously maintain the farm following organic principles, lovingly tending to trees aged from between two and thirty years old. The trees themselves house a wide range of indigenous varieties, including: Marie Ménard, Jeanne Renard (Bitter varieties) Fréquin Rouge, Belle fille de la Manche Kermerrien, Frijelach’, Peau de Chien (Bitter-sweet) Bedan, Dous Moën, Douce Coët Lignée (Sweet) and finally Judor, Locart Vert, Rouget de Dol, Petit Jaune (Sharp). Each cuvee is made according to Cedric’s taste, however the same process is followed time and again. The trees are hand harvested three times between October and December, before further ripening in crates before pressing up to 4 weeks later. The ciders go through two ferments – the first lasting 5 months before bottling, followed by a 3 month fermentation in bottle. The ciders are bottled with no sulphur, just pure juice, naturally sparkling and spontaneous, no collage, only racking and filtering when required. All ciders are brut or extra brut. As for the end result? These are exceptional ciders with a vinous quality, brimming with character, complex and acid driven with perfectly balanced fruit and tannins. Cidre Granit Considered as a brut cider, Cidre Granit is a ‘cuvee parcelaire’, or a ‘single orchard’. The top of the tree cuvee, so to speak. Round, generous, fruity, subtle tannins. Not bitter. Apple blending: 15% bitter, 50% bitter-sweet, 20% sweet, 15% sharp. BrutBrut An extra-brut cider, this expression is fruity, slightly mineral, with good length and liveliness on the palate. Apple blending: 5% bitter, 50% bitter-sweet, 25% sweet, 20% sharp. Premium A brut cider, and another ‘Cuvée parcelaire’ or ‘single orchard’ expression. Smooth bitterness, no astringency, good length on the palate, complex and vinous. Apple blending: 20% bitter, 70% bitter-sweet, 10% sharp. Poiré A brut perry packed with tension, flowery notes such as elderflower, fruity, fresh, round. Apple blending: Apple blending: 30% unknown variety of pears, 70% plan de blanc. www.cidrebio.com Shop ciders Quick View NV Cidrerie du Leguer, Eau de Vie de Cidre Price $184.00 GST Included Quick View NV Cidrerie du Leguer, Ratafia de Pomme 18% Price $110.00 GST Included Quick View Cidrerie du Leguer, IGP Cidre de Bretagne 'Les Cailloux' Price $42.00 GST Included Quick View Cidrerie du Leguer, IGP Cidre de Bretagne 'Granit' Price $35.00 GST Included Load More
- Clos Joliette | Jurancon | Mosaique Wines
Regarded as one of the premier producers in Jurançon, Clos Joliette was founded in 1929, when the Migne family cleared forest in a natural southeast-facing amphitheater to plant a hectare of Petit Manseng. Clos Joliette is truly a myth, some said of Joliette it's “better than Yquem”. Clos Joliette is considered one of those wines one must try in a lifetime, and we are honoured to bring them to Australia. CLOS JOLIETTE Jurancon, South-West France Organic We won’t deny it, wine folk from the South West of France, like Mosaique founder Thomas, will always champion the region and consider its producers as the best. In the case of Clos Joliette, however, it’s hard to disagree - especially when it’s been lauded as “better than Yquem”, by La Revue des Vins de France. Regarded as one of the premier producers in Jurançon, Clos Joliette was founded in 1929, when the Migne family cleared forest in a natural southeast-facing amphitheater to plant a hectare of vines. Going against the grain at the time, the Mignes planted Petit Manseng, rather than the more popular Gros Manseng, and slowly built a modest local following selling their wines for little more than two francs in the old money. Like all good things, it’s hard to keep a lid on it, and before long this niche producer became known as the best in the region and is still revered by some of the world’s best winemakers (in fact, legend has it the late Didier Dagueneau trespassed into the vineyard in the middle of the night to take cuttings to propagate for his own Jurançon estate, Les Jardins de Babylone). Still, with limited income due to the inexpensive bottle price, investment in the property and the vines was minimal. When Maurice Migne, Clos Juliette proprietor throughout the 1960s and 1970s passed away, his widow Jeanne continued production of the wines - although it must be noted that no records exist of how the Mignes farmed the land or made their wine. She was known to be the archetypal picture of a French paysan, always attired in her traditional black apron, under which she tied her leather satchel stuffed with wads of money. In 1989, Jeanne Migne passed away, and with nobody in the family interested in continuing the estate, the vineyard was auctioned off around 1990 or 1991. The Mignes’ son, who was in the car business, sold off the cellar of old vintages, which is why old bottles are incredibly rare (and those you can find now fetch hundreds of euros whenever they come up at auction). There were a few interested parties, including fellow Jurançon winemaker Charles Hours and actor Gérard Depardieu, who had visited the domaine several times and was suitably charmed. Most predicted that Hours would buy the estate; however, the successful bidder was Parisian caviste Michel Renaud. Rather than continuing the legacy, Renaud treated Clos Joliette as a part-time hobby, using pickers from his Armagnac vineyard to conduct the harvest; leaving barrels for five years without racking and topping them up only if necessary; then selling only a fraction of the production to a few friends and cellaring the remainder. Renaud died in 2015, leaving a wife, a daughter and her half-brother. As with all things administrative in France, inheritance laws are complicated so once again the fate of the domaine was in jeopardy. It became widely known that Clos Joliette was for sale, though despite its niche fame, there was no queue of prospective buyers - a situation that remains today. But what of the grapes? Vines don’t just stop growing! Once again, the spirit of the South West has prevailed. Our dear friend Jean-Marc Grussaute from Camin Larredya, also Jurançon, was offered the chance to farm and vinify Clos Joliette 2016 and 2017 vintages, side by side with his wines. Jean-Marc and his winemaker friends from the collective “A Bisto de Nas” (including Christine Dupuy who we represent) were able to buy all the barrels from 2010, 2012, 2013 in addition to the 2016 and 2017, all farmed and vinified themselves. The result has been an incredible selection of complex and aromatic off-dry wines, reflecting the reputation Antoine Gerbelle bestowed on the domaine as “the Romanee Conti of the South-West France”. What makes these wines so sought after is the combination of three unique aspects. First, its location. With only 1.85 hectares Clos Joliette sits at 300m altitude, on the slopes of the hill of Beauvallon (Commune of Jurancon). The vines were planted in 1929 by Madame Migné and exposed to the East and South-East in a natural amphitheater, allowing the grapes to capture the gentle morning sun, rather than afternoon heat. Second, an atypical terroir made of clay-silica, pudding stones, Ponto-Pliocene pebbles and crossed through by a vein of iron. Third, the wine itself - a single varietal 100% Petit Manseng, treated with minimal intervention throughout vinification, no fining or filtration, and long aging in oak barrels for 4 to 6 years. We might add a fourth aspect, being the mystic. There’s little to be said about this wine across the vastness of the internet. They are prized wines, with only 1000 bottles produced each year, sitting firmly in the ‘if you know, you know’ category. Clos Joliette is considered one of those wines one must try in a lifetime, and we are honoured to bring them to Australia. - Domaine Dirler-Cade | Alsace | Mosaique Wines
Domaine Dirler-Cade was established in 1871 by its namesake, Jean Dirler. Today, the estate is run by fifth-generation Jean, continuing the family tradition in the small village of Bergholtz, nestled at the foot of the Vosges Mountains. Together with his wife Ludivine, they manage 18 hectares of vineyards, almost half of which are classified as Grand Cru. Domaine DIRLER-CADE Alsace Organic and Biodynamic certified Much like many success stories in the French wine industry, love and marriage has played an important part in establishing great domaines. The marriage of Jean Dirler and Ludivine Cade in 2000 represented the union of two historic Alsatian winegrowing families, carrying forward a family legacy of producing exceptional wines from some of Alsace’s most prized vineyards, creating Domaine Dirler-Cadé. The Jean Dirler estate was established in 1871 by its namesake, Jean Dirler. Today, the estate is run by fifth-generation Jean, continuing the family tradition in the small village of Bergholtz, nestled at the foot of the Vosges Mountains. His wife, Ludvine Cade, comes from an impressive winemaking lineage as well, with her family owning vineyards in nearby Guebwiller, historically known as Domaine Hell-Cade. Together, they manage 18 hectares of vineyards, almost half of which are classified as Grand Cru—a significant achievement considering that only about 5% of Alsace vineyards have this prestigious designation. Although there is a considered focus on white varietals, mastering the noble Riesling, Muscat, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris, they also produce some Pinot Gris based Cremant, a unique Sylvaner and a small amount of Pinot Noir, all farmed biodynamically since 1998. The conversion to biodynamics was a relatively early one in the landscape of French wine, and cemented the domaine as one of the earliest members of Biodyvin (along with Zind-Humbrecht), the leading association for biodynamic winemakers in France. The Dirler-Cadé team employs traditional methods in the vineyard, such as using a horse to plough the terraces of select vineyards, and applying natural treatments like herbal teas and homoeopathic doses of horsetail. Flowers are removed by hand, old canes are pruned late to maintain vine health, and harvests are done manually. This meticulous attention to detail ensures that the grapes reach their full potential, reflecting the true character of their terroirs. We also need to mention what we think part of the true ‘special sauce’ is - a commitment to maintaining a joyful and positive energy among the team. Occupying some of the most prestigious Grand Cru sites in Alsace, each vineyard is celebrated for its unique terroir, and the domaine’s philosophy divides these vineyards according to the four elements—earth, air, fire, and water—emphasising how each site’s natural conditions influence the wines produced there: Kessler (Fire): The Kessler vineyard is known for its warm, sandstone and clay soils, which create powerful and textured wines. The Grand Cru Kessler Riesling offers impressive intensity and depth, with rich, ripe fruit and a mineral finish. The Heisse Wanne, a prized parcel within Kessler, is particularly celebrated for its opulent, structured wines, often considered worthy of Grand Cru status in its own right. Back in the 16th century, Heisse Wanne site was considered one of the three best plots in all of Alsace, along with the Rangen and the Brand. Spiegel (Air): The Spiegel vineyard’s marl and sandstone soils reflect the sunlight, producing wines that are elegant, airy, and refined. The Riesling and Gewurztraminer from Spiegel are noted for their vibrant acidity and laser-like precision, with delicate fruit and floral aromas. Saering (Water): The calcareous soils of the Saering vineyard lend a distinctive salinity and freshness to the wines. Saering Rieslings are known for their lively, juicy character and remarkable balance, making them perfect expressions of the “water” element. Kitterlé (Earth): The Kitterlé vineyard, with its steep slopes and volcanic soils, produces wines with a smoky, mineral edge and a taut, vertical structure. Rieslings from this site are particularly long-lived, offering incredible complexity and a tension that keeps them vibrant for decades. In the winery, Jean and Ludivine allow nature to take its course as much as possible. Fermentations are spontaneous, using only indigenous yeasts, and the wines are matured on their lees for extended periods, either in stainless steel tanks or old oak foudres. The resulting wines are expressive, complex, and show a remarkable sense of place. This “hands-off” approach allows the vintage and vineyard to dictate the style, rather than imposing a winemaking signature. Even when fermentation stops naturally, leaving a touch of residual sugar, the Dirler-Cadés embrace it as part of the wine’s natural expression. This philosophy results in wines that are sometimes bone-dry, sometimes slightly off-dry, but always beautifully balanced and true to the vintage with a versatility that makes them just as fitting at a three-star Michelin restaurant as they are at a wine bar. With over 150 years of winemaking history, Domaine Dirler-Cadé continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in Alsace. Their commitment to biodynamic principles, combined with their respect for tradition and terroir, has earned them a place among the elite producers of the region. As custodians of some of Alsace’s most important vineyard sites, Jean and Ludivine Dirler are not just making wines—they are preserving a legacy, crafting bottles that speak to the soul of Alsatian wine. Their wines are not just drinks; they are experiences—each one a unique journey through the diverse and breathtaking landscapes of Alsace. - Chateau de Villeneuve | Saumur Champigny | Mosaique Wines
Located in Souzay Champigny Chateau de Villeneuve is composed of 22ha of Cabernet Franc, along with 5ha Chenin Blanc, planted at 5,500 vines per hectare on limestone soils, with an average vine age of 40 years. The vineyard has been certified organic since 2009, however Chevallier has been farming according to organic principles since 1993. It must also be mentioned, the nostalgic Chevallier also has a few small parcels of gorgeous 80-year-old vines from his hometown of Dampierre-sur-Loire. CHATEAU DE VILLENEUVE Saumur-Champigny Organic certified Why purchase just any old vineyard when you can snap up one with an 18th century chateau, complete with sweeping views of the Loire?! This may or may not have been the train of thought of Jean-Pierre Chevallier’s parents when they purchased Chateau de Villeneuve in1969, but in any case we consider it a good buy. The chateau had long been one in the hands of winemakers, with records showing wines produced on the site since 1577. Fittingly (and perhaps necessarily) a maze of old cellars, still in operation, can be found hidden underneath, and more recently in 2016 a modern winery was added to ensure the wines are made in the best of conditions. The estate itself is composed of 22ha of Cabernet Franc, along with 5ha Chenin Blanc, planted at 5,500 vines per hectare on limestone soils, with an average vine age of 40 years. The vineyard has been certified organic since 2009, however Chevallier has been farming according to organic principles since 1993. It must also be mentioned, the nostalgic Chevallier also has a few small parcels of gorgeous 80-year-old vines from his hometown of Dampierre-sur-Loire. In the vineyard, the utmost care is taken at each stage of the vine’s lifecycle. Chevallier prides himself on not taking ‘short cuts’, refusing to use chemical fertilizers or pesticides and working his vines and emphasizes that "in organic culture, we obtain more stable wines even at 13 ° and ph are lower. The roots really plunge into the ground.” Come vintage time, all grapes are hand harvested and carried in small crates to reduce any unnecessary damage. This is followed by hand sorting on the sorting table, before they are gently delivered, with the help of gravity, to underground vats, thus avoiding the harshness of the pumps. Aging takes place in a mix of foudre, 500L barrels, concrete and stainless steel tanks depending on the nature of the cuvee. Importantly, there is minimal sulfur used in the winery, and Chavallier does not add yeast or chaptalise. Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc lovers should find their happiness with Chateau de Villeneuve wines. Quality is the number one aim for Chevallier, resulting in balanced, mouth-watering cuvees, reflective of the land in which they are grown and the expertise of a family with five generations of local knowledge. Happily, the sixth generation are already on the job, with Jean-Pierre’s two daughters set to continue the family tradition - we can’t wait to taste their legacy! Jean-Marc and his mother run the show and farm 'their hill' together. The 9 hectares of vines and farm have been owned by the family since the early 1900s. Organic farming has been the norm here from 2007, certified biodynamic since 2010. camin larredya Jurancon, South-West France Organic and biodynamic certified Jurançon near the city of Pau is a special place for many reasons. It’s simply one of the most beautiful French vineyards, with steep slopes and scenic landscape, including the towering, often snow-covered, Pyrenees in the background. Jurançon is a pocket-size appellation of about 1,000 hectares farmed by 100 producers. Producing only white wine, it is historically known for late-harvest sweet wine or 'moelleux'. However dry white Jurançon wine was recognised with a separate AOC in 1975, known as 'Jurançon sec'. Dry Jurançon can be among the best whites you'll ever taste, particularly in the hands of a legend like Didier Dagueneau who helped to put Jurançon on the map. Today Jean-Marc Grussaute from Camin Larredya is one of the leading force and gaining plenty of fans among the sommelier community in France. Jean-Marc and his mother run the show and farm 'their hill' together. The 9 hectares of vines and farm have been owned by the family since the early 1900s, with most of the current vines were planted in 1970s by Jean-Marc’s father. Organic farming has been the norm here from 2007 onwards, certified in 2010 and turning to biodynmaic farming in 2016. The vineyard is classically local in varietal plantings: 65% Petit Manseng, 27% Gros Manseng, 8% Petit Courbu and Camaralet. The vineyard sits at 300m altitude, with soils of silica-clay and subsoils of puddingstone. Precision is life here, every action serves the "purpose of the terroir and its continuity", according to Jean-Marc, who respects the soil’s health and its life. It's essential for him that the roots go deep to express the terroirs in the final wine. Jean-Marc works the soils, grow cereals or pulses in between the rows, and uses natural compost when needed. The singularity and honesty of his wines come from permanent attention. "La Part Davant", or oriental part is a Jurançon Sec blend of Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng and some Petit Courbu. Skin contact at first, the must ferments with natural yeast, moving with the temperature of the cellar and vitality of the fermentation. Then fermentation and ageing on lees for at least 8 months in barrels and foudres. Ageing takes place in barrel and foudres, with batonage to snap the lees back in suspension. The wine is then left to rest and evolve in the cool cellars. Intense on the nose, with beautiful notes of white peach, yeasty and toasty character. On the palate, it's all about the lively texture and fleshy white fruits as well as orange and citrus notes, with an elegant driven acidity and long mineral finish. Domaine Nudant Ladoix-Serigny, Burgundy Sustainable Established in the 15th century, Domaine Nudant is located in Ladoix-Serigny. Fast forward to 2003, when Guillaume Nudant spearheaded a new generation making his debut for the Domaine. Today he has 16 hectares of vines in his care, spreading across the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits including prestigious terroir such as Grand Crus Corton-Charlemagne, Corton-Bressandes, Echezeaux, along with several Premiers Cru on the hill of Corton; Aloxe Corton “Les Valozières”, “La Coutière” or the monopole “Clos de la Boulotte”. In Ladoix near the cellar, they produce Ladoix village, Ladoix 1er cru “Les Gréchons”, “Les Buis”, “La Corvée”. Finally they also farm vineyards in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne Romanée, Volnay 1er cru “Les Santenots”, Puligny-Montrachet with the 1er cru “Les Folatières”, as well as a beautiful Meursault village. Phew! Young Guillaume has carved out his niche, following winemaking and viticultural practices to shine a light on the incredible terroir he is now the custodian of. This includes grating selection, yield control, regular ploughing of the vines, organic composting, copper treatments and sustainable farming without the use of herbicides. Discovering these wines is indeed a journey through Burgundy. They are impressive, honest expressions of place that continue to evolve in the bottle, whilst being approachable and moreish on release. Ladoix 1er Cru “Les Buis” Delicious Ladoix, bright with high precision and vibrancy. Made from a small 0.98 hectare, with 40 year old vineyard. This wine has a delicate nose with aromas of red fruits such as blackcurrants and cherries. Elegant aromatics, with a hint of earthiness. Limited production of approx. 5 500 bottles every year. With careful cellaring, enjoy up to 10 years old. Vosne Romanee From 0.94 hectares, located in the small village of Vosne-Romanée, with old vines that are more than 50 years. Made of low yield (37 hectoliters), this Pinot expresses itself beautifully with an intense colour and a nose made up of dark berries such as blackberries and blueberries. Powerful and still full of finesse, you will also get a touch of spice thanks to 20% new oak on the finish. Decant for an hour in its youth before enjoying, alternatively it will develop for 15 years. Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots (vine leased) Les Santenots vineyard is located in the southern part of Volnay, near the village of Meursault. The particular structure of the soil (limestone, gravel and marl) makes Les Santenots a very aromatic wine, full of blackberries, raspberries and subtle notes of oak. It’s an elegant wine, delicately complex and concentrated at the same time. Meursault (vine leased) Citrusy, with subtle notes of spice and vanilla. On the palate, it shows a deep sense of place through purity, minerality and a finer texture if compared to most super creamy Meursault. Impressive length and finish. - Domaine Vincent Gaudry | Sancerre | Mosaique Wines
Vincent Gaudry lives in the tiny vintners' hamlet of Le Petit Chambre in Sury en Vaux, 3 kilometres from Sancerre. Sury en Vaux means “the smiling valley”, and it makes much sense when you reach this place. Vincent took over the vineyard from his family in 1993, introducing organic and biodynamic. Domaine Vincent Gaudry Sancerre, Loire Valley Biodynamic certified Vincent Gaudry lives in the tiny vintners' hamlet of Le Petit Chambre in Sury en Vaux, 3 kilometres from Sancerre. Sury en Vaux means “the smiling valley”, and it makes much sense when you reach this place. Vincent took over the vineyard from his family in 1993, introducing the start organic and biodynamic farming. In 2002, the vineyard was certified organic, before full biodynamic Demeter certification in 2004. Organic and Biodynamic were essential for two reasons: first for his health and then to respect his terroirs. As a true minimalist Vincent’s guiding principle is “Trust in Nature”. He makes wine in tune with the power of the elements, with a feeling of being profoundly connected to the land. Inspired by local vignerons of the past from the village, insiders considering Gaudry's wines to be the most authentic expression of Sancerre. Although biodynamics is one of his pillars, Vincent continues to push boundaries by mixing pragmatism and intuition to pioneer new methods, which has earned him a following. The 9 hectare vineyard is composed of limestone and marl, 90% planted with Sauvignon Blanc and 10% with Pinot Noir. The vineyard averages vines of 40 years of age, planted by massal selection from a plot of 90 year old vines of old Sauvignon varieties. It gives berries of different size and maturity, which Vincent believes brings complexity in his wines. The grapes are all hand harvested in small baskets. In the winery, Vincent remains a traditionalist, shying away from trends he looks for balance between both varietal and terroir. The wines are fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, with native yeasts to allow the terroir and varietal expression to shine through. The wines are then aged on lees and are bottled unfined and unfiltered with the bottling date according to the lunar calendar. The result is precisely delineated wines with stony minerality, concentration, texture, weight, complexity and lengthy vibrant finish. Le Tournebride Sancerre This 30 years old vineyard is representative of the 3 Terroirs of Sancerre: the stony, rubble-like Kimmeridgian limestone (Caillottes) brings the aromatics, the clay-limestone or marl (Terres Blanches) brings the structure in the mouth and the flint (Silex) the length. The wines are vinified with natural yeast in stainless steel and oak. Each batch moves from one vessel to the other, before final blending and ageing on fine lees. The result is a wine with spice, texture and impressive length, with a mineral finish. Constellation du Scorpion Sancerre This wine is dedicated to the biodynamic memories of the elements and named for the scorpion sign, which is sharp like the Silex’s terroir where the vine are planted. The wine is vinified in oak, with time varying each year based on vintage conditions. Scorpion is best enjoyed after a few moments of air - after which it opens to a textured palate of almond, lime-flower and grapefruit. The mineral attack persists, with flint and earth flavours, grilled almond, dried pear, blood orange and apricot. The finish is saline, elegant, clean and long, with lingering white fruits. SUSTAINABLE GROWERS SUSTAINABLE GROWERS Farming sustainably, respecting nature. OUR FAMILY VINEYARD OUR FAMILY VINEYARD Chai Saint Etienne, our roots in France. Mosaique Wines imports and distributes artisanal wines from France. We travel extensively throughout the country each year to bring you a collection of wines that reflect the heart and soul of this land- a mosaic of small and beautiful parts that make a bigger picture. Each wine has been hand-selected for the unique qualities it expresses, lovingly made by local producers who dedicated their lives to their craft. These producers respect the land they farm above all else, using sustainable, organic or biodynamic techniques to nourish their vines and the ecosystem around them. We have endeavoured to tell their stories in the hope you can envisage yourself sharing a glass with these characters, and enjoying the fruits of their labour. As a direct importer we aim to deliver fair pricing and to help you discover some of France's rising vignerons. We are very lucky to have a strong connection with our roots in the South-West of France with Thomas' family vineyard, Domaine Chai Saint Etienne. Our wines are made to be opened, shared and enjoyed in good company. Santé! direct from the vineyard to your glass Getting our wines to you in the best possible condition is paramount. It all starts with sustainably, organically or biodynamically farmed grapes coming from unique terroirs. Our wines must express and respect their sense of place. Like Thomas' family vineyard, our producers are family owned, small businesses run by real artisans. They work with local grapes, low intervention winemaking and minimal sulfites. The selection process is rigorous, and each vintage is tasted prior to import. Once selected, our wines are shipped by sea, temperature controlled to avoid any alteration of the wine. This type of transport is chosen to ensure quality is maintained from the vineyard to you. Once they arrive, our warehouse keeps the wine in optimal storage conditions - nothing less than the best!
- Thierry Navarre | Mosaique Wines
Thierry Navarre is a bit of an icon in his region of Languedoc. He is widely regarded as one of the most respected natural winemakers in the area, best known for continuing his family’s dedication to resurrecting lost and ancient grape varietals. DOMAINE Thierry Navarre Saint-Chinian, Languedoc Organic Two Star La Revue de Vin de France: “Amongst the elite of the area.” New York Times: "To Find the Best of Languedoc, Follow the Producer" 2019 Jancis Robinson: "Languedoc for terroir-driven bargains" 2004 The story of how Thierry Navarre came to be part of our Mosaique Wines offering is a long one, literally, but we’re so glad we persisted and can bring these wonderful wines to Australia. Thierry Navarre is a producer we have had in our mind for some years. We would check in every year to see if we might get a response but given he spends so much time in the vineyard, and not so much time in front of the phone or computer, it proved a difficult task. Finally, we saw a chance in March 2023 - Thierry would be at the La Dive a Bouteille Wine Fair, and so would Thomas on a flying trip to France. The trip was almost accounted for by the minute, and as the morning of the wine fair ticked by, Thierry was nowhere to be seen and Thomas needed to leave to go to another wine fair. Of course, just as Thomas was leaving, Thierry arrives already in deep conversation with someone else. Long story short, Thomas decides to be late (not a big drama for the French), and stay until he can finally meet Thierry - an encounter years in the making and instantly worth the wait. Thierry Navarre is a bit of an icon in his region of Languedoc. He is widely regarded as one of the most respected natural winemakers in the area, and his wines are celebrated for their depth, complexity, and terroir-driven flavours. Without question, Navarre is best known for continuing his family’s dedication to promoting diversity of grape varietals in the region, resurrecting lost and ancient grape varietals - most of which are lower in alcohol. Taking over from over the domaine's vineyards in 1988, Navarre is a man who lives in his vines - a patch of 15ha based in and around the picturesque village of Roquebrun (which incidentally is set to become a grand cru of Saint-Chinian). His vineyards are farmed organically and filled with a role call of both popular and yet to be discovered varieties including Œillades, Ribeyrenc, Syrah, Cinsault, Grenache noir, Carignan, Romorantin, Clairette, Grenache gris, Marsanne, Terret and Muscat à petit grains blanc. These vines have a southwest exposure, and combined with soils composed of loose brown schist, generally produce lighter, mineral driven, delicate, more elegant styles compared to the wines from further south in Saint-Chinian. His lower alcohol (11%) and brighter ‘Le Vin d’Oeillades’ (Cinsault’s cousin) and ‘Le Ribeyrenc’ are French sommelier favourites and considered a ‘best kept secret’. The grapes are hand harvested, with some fully or partially destemmed. Following a natural fermentation in cement tanks, some of the cuvees are vinified traditionally, while others are vinified with carbonic maceration. Ageing occurs in a mix of tanks, old 228 litre and 500 litre barrels and foudre for 12 months. The resulting wines are unfined, yet they are filtered and have low sulphur. Navarre’s intuition for winemaking and passion for history translate into wines sought out by true wine lovers, a discovery not to be missed that we couldn’t be more excited to share!
