- Cros des Calades | Ardeche & Rhone | Mosaique Wines
CROS DES CALADES Ardeche & Rhone Organic non-certified Nestled in the picturesque village of Grospierres, Cros des Calades is the innovative project of Florence and Benoît Chazallon, renowned for their work at Château de la Selve. Grounded in organic practices, Cros des Calades champions the essence of Ardeche and southern Rhône’s unique terroirs by sourcing grapes from five neighbouring organic vineyards, each adding distinctive character to their wines. The Chazallons follow the same philosophy here as at Château de la Selve, emphasising minimal intervention in the cellar to produce wines that are pure, vibrant, and true to the land. The vineyard’s diverse terroirs—from the cooler, clay-limestone soils, near the Cévennes to the warm Mediterranean climate—create ideal conditions for expressive, easy-drinking wines across various styles. The name "Cros des Calades" reflects a deep sense of place, derived from the Ardèche dialect meaning "pathway in the gorge"—a tribute to the region’s striking, mountainous landscape where these vines flourish. The Cros des Calades Ballon range includes a white, rosé, and red wine. Each wine is crafted with natural fermentation, showcasing the distinct character of its varietals: the red blends Grenache and Syrah; the white combines Grenache Blanc, Chardonnay, and Rolle (also known as Vermentino); and the rosé is a vibrant mix of Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsault. In our time searching France for wines we love, it is rare to find wines that sit at such an affordable price point, which are truly a delight to drink and reflect our commitment to organic and sustainable wine production. - Domaine Marius Bielle | Mosaique Wines
DOMAINE MARIUS BIELLE Lalande-de-Pomerol, Bordeaux Organic The face of Bordeaux is changing. For a region so steeped in wine history, the pace is perhaps slower than other regions, however the Bordeaux our parents knew is quietly beginning to share the spotlight with a group of energised and talented new blood, including Damien Bielle of Domaine Marius Bielle. We met Damien around a table of laughter, pizzas and of course wine. This unique character was introduced to us by Olivier from Chateau Gombaude-Guillot, both young rising stars of Bordeaux who became fast friends. A passion for wine was an obvious shared connection, which has evolved into sharing a warehouse, however they also discovered a joint love of MMA fighting. Word is they’ve even fashioned a simple yet effective gym and a fighting ring in the warehouse! Domaine Marius Bielle was founded in the 1940s by Damien’s grandfather, the domaine’s namesake, in Lalande-de-Pomerol. In this area, a grape maligned in other wine growing regions is seen as the king. Here, Merlot rules them all. There are no blends, the wines are 100% Merlot, a ‘one terroir, one cepage’ approach championed by Burgundy. It is this approach that allows Damien to focus on making wines that highlight the nuances of this grape. Graduating as an agronomist engineer, he went onto oenology school in Bordeaux and then worked for some of the most prestigious producers in the world - Chateau Petrus (Pomerol) and Chateau Cheval Blanc (Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classe), before finally deciding to return to the family estate to create his own expression in 2020. The process starts on the famous Pomerol soils of sand and gravel, with 13 hectares of organically farmed vineyard (certified 2021). Weaved in between the oceans of surrounding vines, you’ll find the Domaine Marius Bielle ecosystem - breaking the monotony with trees, grass and flowers growing in the vineyard, freeing space to create orchards, vegetable gardens and allowing a few animals in the vines. When vintage rolls around, the grapes are handpicked and sorted, before maceration by infusion, and a slow natural fermentation with vinification occuring in stainless steel tanks. Like a painter in his workshop, it’s a moment of focus and presence - creating a sketch of the vintage. The ‘slow but steady’ ethos continues through to aging, using concrete tanks and amphoras to gently and softly raise his Merlot. Damien grew up in contact with les “vins d’avant”, an old school style of wine in the best of ways, those wines that took the time of aging in the cellar and then in bottles before being released. This has without doubt influenced his winemaking, insisting the wines reveal themselves in time, finding their complexity along the way and without the use of sulphur, filtering or fining. We are excited to be bringing these vibrant and contemporary wines to Australia. It’s Damien’s wish that these Bordeaux wines that are opened at tables filled with laughter and good friends, enjoyed with some quality meat on the barbecue, not to be intimidating and tasted in suits and silence. He wants his wines to bring conversation. Having tasted his line up and a range of spectacular back vintages, we’re sure they will. - Domaine Ludovic Bonnardot | Côte de Beaune | Mosaique Wines
DOMAINE LUDOVIC BONNARDOT Côte de Beaune, Burgundy Organic There are not too many teenagers who would choose to spend their days in the vineyard, let alone experimenting on their grandfather’s grapes with natural winemaking. But then again, Ludovic Bonnardot was not your average teenager. Burgundian born and bred, Ludovic now guides the winemaking at the family estate - Domaine Bonnardot, taking over from his parents in 2006. The estate covers 15-hectares with two operations: one centered in Santenay, the wine-growing focuses on Côte de Beaune and Hautes-Côtes de Beaune appellations, while blackcurrants (cassis), asparagus and cereals are grown in Bonnencontre near the family home, just south of Dijon. The polyculture approach is a reflection of the long heritage of winemaking in the family, which dates back to 1470. Throughout the centuries, it was (and arguably still is) essential to have year-round agricultural output to spread the risk of crop failure and ensure a source of income for the family. Ludovic’s interest in natural winemaking at an early age was influenced by his mother Elisabeth, the Domaine’s winemaker while he was growing up. Elisabth graduated her enology studies in Beaune, studying alongside and eventually interning with Jules Chauvet - who is considered to be the father of natural winemaking. As a result, Elisabeth’s approach to winemaking was very much shaped by Chauvet, and she began to practice more natural approaches to her winemaking with her Burgundies. Today, Domaine Bonnardot is farmed organically, with the conversion starting when Ludovic returned to the family lands after graduating his winemaking education. Ludovic believes this approach is key to revealing the best nuances of each site across 18 appellations and 50 plots, along with the practice of natural vinification with no addition of sulfur or oenological products during vinification and low to no addition at bottling. The vineyards include Hautes Côtes de Beaune ‘En Chaignot’ and ‘Sur Evelle’, Bourgogne Côte d’Or ‘Clos Botaveaux’ Monopole, Bourgogne Aligoté, Santenay ’Saint Jean’, Santenay 1er cru ‘Clos Rousseau’, Maranges ‘Sur le Bois’, Pommard, Chassagne Montrachet and Puligny Montrachet 1er ‘La Garenne’, with vineyards average age of 45 years old. Before the beginning of Spring, natural fertiliser made from vegetal or animal matter is added to the soils to bring life. Then all the vines are plowed to encourage the decomposition of the organic matter and aeration of the earth. From here until vintage, Ludovic and his brother Emilien tend to the vines with debudding, relevage and trimming. Once vintage arrives, plots are harvested by hand at their best maturity and bought into the winery for hand sorting. Vinification of the white grapes includes slowly pressing the whole bunches, with the must then put into oak barrels for a 12-18 month fermentation. The fermentations are natural, with no addition of sulfur or addition of oenological product. After natural settling in the barrel and light filtration, the whites are ready for bottling. The red wines range between 30% and 100% whole bunch inclusion, with the berries macerated in oak tanks between 20 and 180 days. Again there is no addition of sulfur or product, and fermentation occurs with indigenous yeast. After the pressurage the wines are put into oak barrels for up to 12 - 18 months aging. The reds are not fined or filtered before bottling, with low or no addition of sulfur. This sometimes generates a light deposit however doesn’t alter the quality of the wine. Domaine Bonnardot wines are fresh, vibrant and pure, reflecting the considered approach to farming and vinification to ensure transparency of place. We love how they express each site with a very minimal extraction or oak influence. Most of all we appreciate the rare value for money these wines offer - something we don’t see much of in Burgundy these days. We’ll drink to that! - Domaine Duseigneur | Chateauneuf-du-Pape | Mosaique Wines
Domaine DUSEIGNEUR Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Lirac, Cotes du Rhone Organic and Biodynamic certified ‘To receive and to pass on’, this is the mission statement driving Bernard Duseigneur and the team at Domaine Duseigneur. And walk the walk they do. The Duseigneur family relocated from Algeria in the 1960s, starting over in the Rhone Valley with ambition, with the patriarch Jean taking over abandoned plots and planting vines in Lirac. With not much money and children to feed, he set about working the land to improve the health of the soil and therefore the vines. It was this traditional approach to farming, coupled with a lack of funds to purchase chemicals, that set the Domaine out on an organic pathway from its inception. As per the family’s mission statement, the whole operation is driven by a desire to function harmoniously with their environment, honour the terroir and pass on the knowledge to future generations. Today, the Domaine is run by Jean’s son Bernard Duseigneur, who commands a total of 28 hectares, including nine in Chateauneuf with the remainder spread across the right bank in Lirac and Laudin. The vines are considerably aged across the board, averaging 50-60 years old, with some 135 year old beauties producing a tiny 800 bottles a year, Under Bernard’s stewardship, the Domaine began practising biodynamic techniques in 2002, with Ecocert certification three years later, furthering the dedication to the health of their vineyards. These wines are a true reflection of their place, we couldn’t be more excited to introduce them to Australia! - Thierry Navarre | Mosaique Wines
DOMAINE Thierry Navarre Saint-Chinian, Languedoc Organic Two Star La Revue de Vin de France: “Amongst the elite of the area.” New York Times: "To Find the Best of Languedoc, Follow the Producer" 2019 Jancis Robinson: "Languedoc for terroir-driven bargains" 2004 The story of how Thierry Navarre came to be part of our Mosaique Wines offering is a long one, literally, but we’re so glad we persisted and can bring these wonderful wines to Australia. Thierry Navarre is a producer we have had in our mind for some years. We would check in every year to see if we might get a response but given he spends so much time in the vineyard, and not so much time in front of the phone or computer, it proved a difficult task. Finally, we saw a chance in March 2023 - Thierry would be at the La Dive a Bouteille Wine Fair, and so would Thomas on a flying trip to France. The trip was almost accounted for by the minute, and as the morning of the wine fair ticked by, Thierry was nowhere to be seen and Thomas needed to leave to go to another wine fair. Of course, just as Thomas was leaving, Thierry arrives already in deep conversation with someone else. Long story short, Thomas decides to be late (not a big drama for the French), and stay until he can finally meet Thierry - an encounter years in the making and instantly worth the wait. Thierry Navarre is a bit of an icon in his region of Languedoc. He is widely regarded as one of the most respected natural winemakers in the area, and his wines are celebrated for their depth, complexity, and terroir-driven flavours. Without question, Navarre is best known for continuing his family’s dedication to promoting diversity of grape varietals in the region, resurrecting lost and ancient grape varietals - most of which are lower in alcohol. Taking over from over the domaine's vineyards in 1988, Navarre is a man who lives in his vines - a patch of 15ha based in and around the picturesque village of Roquebrun (which incidentally is set to become a grand cru of Saint-Chinian). His vineyards are farmed organically and filled with a role call of both popular and yet to be discovered varieties including Œillades, Ribeyrenc, Syrah, Cinsault, Grenache noir, Carignan, Romorantin, Clairette, Grenache gris, Marsanne, Terret and Muscat à petit grains blanc. These vines have a southwest exposure, and combined with soils composed of loose brown schist, generally produce lighter, mineral driven, delicate, more elegant styles compared to the wines from further south in Saint-Chinian. His lower alcohol (11%) and brighter ‘Le Vin d’Oeillades’ (Cinsault’s cousin) and ‘Le Ribeyrenc’ are French sommelier favourites and considered a ‘best kept secret’. The grapes are hand harvested, with some fully or partially destemmed. Following a natural fermentation in cement tanks, some of the cuvees are vinified traditionally, while others are vinified with carbonic maceration. Ageing occurs in a mix of tanks, old 228 litre and 500 litre barrels and foudre for 12 months. The resulting wines are unfined, yet they are filtered and have low sulphur. Navarre’s intuition for winemaking and passion for history translate into wines sought out by true wine lovers, a discovery not to be missed that we couldn’t be more excited to share! - Domaine Laguerre | Roussillon | Mosaique Wines
DOMAINE LAGUERRE Roussillon Organic certified and Biodynamic, in-conversion Domaine Laguerre, is one of the finest domains in the Roussillon, with high-altitude mountain vineyards producing vibrant wines of terroir. The Domaine is run by the enthusiastic and energetic Éric Laguerre, who took over his family's 40 hectares of vineyards in 1999. Resolving to go back to basics and grow / make wine as naturally as possible from the start, Eric and his wife Corinne restored and replanted most of the vine-land and bottled their first vintage in 2001. The result is organically-farmed and naturally-made artisanal Roussillon wines, offering superb wines and incredible value. A visit to Eric in the tiny village of Saint Martin de Fenouillet (not far from Maury) requires steep climbs through a mountain pass up to the highest, cooler climate vineyards in the Roussillon (500 meters elevation). Here you’ll find plantings of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Cabernet for red and, Grenache Blanc, Rolle, Roussanne, Marssanne Macabeu for whites, with an average vine age of 40 years old. The vines sit on acidic terroir made of gneiss and broken-down granite with some pockets of quartz and decomposed granite. These soils combined with the cool climate, the “tramontane” winds, low yields and Éric's superb farming, create distinctive bright, balanced wine with freshness, fruit definition, excellent mineral tension that deepens with time in bottle. In the vineyards, organic and biodynamic practices are observed, with certification awarded for the former and soon for the latter. Harvest in this area is typically late for the region, starting at the end of September and lasting until mid-October. The grapes are hand-harvested in the early morning to ensure freshness, with sorting done in the vines. The grapes are then taken to the cellar and fermented with natural yeast, and vinified separately in vessels such as fibre tanks, concrete tanks and old oak demi-muid. Wines from Roussillon are often undiscovered gems. The whites combine purity along with weight and ripe fruit flavours. The reds on the other hand are often high in alcohol (over 14% natural) but not heavy. “Le Ciste Blanc” This white blend is one of the most interesting whites of southern France, comprising Grenache Blanc, Rolle (Vermentino), Marsanne, Roussanne, and Macabeu. "Eos Blanc" This wine is a rewarding discovery for anyone seeking an intriguing wine of terroir at an affordable price. 65% Grenache Blanc, 35% Macabeu. The increased percentages of Macabeu have made this lovely wine even more distinctive. "Eos Rouge" An elegant and brighter red, blend of 80% Grenache from 40-year-old gobelet-trained vines, with some Carignan and Syrah. “Domaine Laguerre, in the Roussillon. An absolute gem. Superb every day wine, you can age 10+ years, for a ridiculous price. Superb farming in the altitude vineyards above Perpignan, old vines gardened with love, grapes handled with dedicated care. How can this vigneron not be more revered for offering such treats at such value. White and red. Entry level cuvée or « grande cuvée ». It makes me so happy and excited to be able to open his wines at Racines NY. - Domaine Dirler-Cade | Alsace | Mosaique Wines
Domaine DIRLER-CADE Alsace Organic and Biodynamic certified Much like many success stories in the French wine industry, love and marriage has played an important part in establishing great domaines. The marriage of Jean Dirler and Ludivine Cade in 2000 represented the union of two historic Alsatian winegrowing families, carrying forward a family legacy of producing exceptional wines from some of Alsace’s most prized vineyards, creating Domaine Dirler-Cadé. The Jean Dirler estate was established in 1871 by its namesake, Jean Dirler. Today, the estate is run by fifth-generation Jean, continuing the family tradition in the small village of Bergholtz, nestled at the foot of the Vosges Mountains. His wife, Ludvine Cade, comes from an impressive winemaking lineage as well, with her family owning vineyards in nearby Guebwiller, historically known as Domaine Hell-Cade. Together, they manage 18 hectares of vineyards, almost half of which are classified as Grand Cru—a significant achievement considering that only about 5% of Alsace vineyards have this prestigious designation. Although there is a considered focus on white varietals, mastering the noble Riesling, Muscat, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris, they also produce some Pinot Gris based Cremant, a unique Sylvaner and a small amount of Pinot Noir, all farmed biodynamically since 1998. The conversion to biodynamics was a relatively early one in the landscape of French wine, and cemented the domaine as one of the earliest members of Biodyvin (along with Zind-Humbrecht), the leading association for biodynamic winemakers in France. The Dirler-Cadé team employs traditional methods in the vineyard, such as using a horse to plough the terraces of select vineyards, and applying natural treatments like herbal teas and homoeopathic doses of horsetail. Flowers are removed by hand, old canes are pruned late to maintain vine health, and harvests are done manually. This meticulous attention to detail ensures that the grapes reach their full potential, reflecting the true character of their terroirs. We also need to mention what we think part of the true ‘special sauce’ is - a commitment to maintaining a joyful and positive energy among the team. Occupying some of the most prestigious Grand Cru sites in Alsace, each vineyard is celebrated for its unique terroir, and the domaine’s philosophy divides these vineyards according to the four elements—earth, air, fire, and water—emphasising how each site’s natural conditions influence the wines produced there: Kessler (Fire): The Kessler vineyard is known for its warm, sandstone and clay soils, which create powerful and textured wines. The Grand Cru Kessler Riesling offers impressive intensity and depth, with rich, ripe fruit and a mineral finish. The Heisse Wanne, a prized parcel within Kessler, is particularly celebrated for its opulent, structured wines, often considered worthy of Grand Cru status in its own right. Back in the 16th century, Heisse Wanne site was considered one of the three best plots in all of Alsace, along with the Rangen and the Brand. Spiegel (Air): The Spiegel vineyard’s marl and sandstone soils reflect the sunlight, producing wines that are elegant, airy, and refined. The Riesling and Gewurztraminer from Spiegel are noted for their vibrant acidity and laser-like precision, with delicate fruit and floral aromas. Saering (Water): The calcareous soils of the Saering vineyard lend a distinctive salinity and freshness to the wines. Saering Rieslings are known for their lively, juicy character and remarkable balance, making them perfect expressions of the “water” element. Kitterlé (Earth): The Kitterlé vineyard, with its steep slopes and volcanic soils, produces wines with a smoky, mineral edge and a taut, vertical structure. Rieslings from this site are particularly long-lived, offering incredible complexity and a tension that keeps them vibrant for decades. In the winery, Jean and Ludivine allow nature to take its course as much as possible. Fermentations are spontaneous, using only indigenous yeasts, and the wines are matured on their lees for extended periods, either in stainless steel tanks or old oak foudres. The resulting wines are expressive, complex, and show a remarkable sense of place. This “hands-off” approach allows the vintage and vineyard to dictate the style, rather than imposing a winemaking signature. Even when fermentation stops naturally, leaving a touch of residual sugar, the Dirler-Cadés embrace it as part of the wine’s natural expression. This philosophy results in wines that are sometimes bone-dry, sometimes slightly off-dry, but always beautifully balanced and true to the vintage with a versatility that makes them just as fitting at a three-star Michelin restaurant as they are at a wine bar. With over 150 years of winemaking history, Domaine Dirler-Cadé continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in Alsace. Their commitment to biodynamic principles, combined with their respect for tradition and terroir, has earned them a place among the elite producers of the region. As custodians of some of Alsace’s most important vineyard sites, Jean and Ludivine Dirler are not just making wines—they are preserving a legacy, crafting bottles that speak to the soul of Alsatian wine. Their wines are not just drinks; they are experiences—each one a unique journey through the diverse and breathtaking landscapes of Alsace. - Clotilde Davenne | Chablis | Mosaique Wines
clotilde davenne Chablis, Burgundy Organic non-certified Meeting Clotilde Davenne and trying all her wines from the Petit Chablis to her best Grand Cru vineyards made things very clear: she knows what she is doing. Clotilde was not from a wine family; her father was a humble farmer near the Morvan mountains. She learned how to make wine at school in 1986 and later travelled to California for vintage. In 1989, Davenne's journey in Chablis started, working for one of the region's star producers: Jean-Marc Brocard. During a incredible 17 years with mentor Brocard, she gained an intimate knowledge of unique terroir and understanding of vintage styles. Then in 2005, Davenne set off on her own path, starting with the 1.9-hectare plot of Petit Chablis called “Les Temps Perdu” (which mean the lost time). Despite locals telling her that this land was a waste of time, Davenne knew this vineyard had potential. The vines were lying on Kimmeridgian soils just like AOC Chablis terroir, only called “Petit” because of its exposition to the North. With growing self confidence, she started putting together a patchwork of vineyard expressing different grapes and terroirs, one plot of land at a time. It now includes a mosaic of beautiful vineyards: Bourgogne AOC, Petit Chablis, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru (Vaucoupin, Montmains, Fourchaume, Vaillons) and Chablis Grand Cru (Bougros, Les Clos, Blanchots), as well as 100 year old Sauvignon Blanc from Saint-Bris and Pinot Noir from Irancy. Her gamble paid off, becoming one of Chablis rising stars thanks to her hard work and the purity of her wines. Clotilde was hugely honoured to be included in Jancis Robinson and Hugh Johnson 's "The World Atlas of Wine" for one of her best vineyards: Montmains 1er Cru Chablis. Now Davenne's 40 year old Chablis vines are located in the village of Courgis, south of Chablis. The vineyard is sheltered from winds, on a steep slope of Kimmeridgian with soil, peppered with fossilised oysters from when the sea covered the Paris basin150 million years ago. Clotilde farms her vineyard naturally, without the use of chemicals, with almost all of her production is harvested by hand. You won't find any oak barrel in her cellars however, as Clotilde is a big believer of stainless steel vinification for her Chablis, focusing on purity and terroir expression. All Davenne's wines undergo malolactic fermentation for complexity, with use of the lunar calendar for racking and bottling, then light filtration.
