- Clos Joliette | Jurancon | Mosaique Wines
CLOS JOLIETTE Jurancon, South-West France Organic We won’t deny it, wine folk from the South West of France, like Mosaique founder Thomas, will always champion the region and consider its producers as the best. In the case of Clos Joliette, however, it’s hard to disagree - especially when it’s been lauded as “better than Yquem”, by La Revue des Vins de France. Regarded as one of the premier producers in Jurançon, Clos Joliette was founded in 1929, when the Migne family cleared forest in a natural southeast-facing amphitheater to plant a hectare of vines. Going against the grain at the time, the Mignes planted Petit Manseng, rather than the more popular Gros Manseng, and slowly built a modest local following selling their wines for little more than two francs in the old money. Like all good things, it’s hard to keep a lid on it, and before long this niche producer became known as the best in the region and is still revered by some of the world’s best winemakers (in fact, legend has it the late Didier Dagueneau trespassed into the vineyard in the middle of the night to take cuttings to propagate for his own Jurançon estate, Les Jardins de Babylone). Still, with limited income due to the inexpensive bottle price, investment in the property and the vines was minimal. When Maurice Migne, Clos Juliette proprietor throughout the 1960s and 1970s passed away, his widow Jeanne continued production of the wines - although it must be noted that no records exist of how the Mignes farmed the land or made their wine. She was known to be the archetypal picture of a French paysan, always attired in her traditional black apron, under which she tied her leather satchel stuffed with wads of money. In 1989, Jeanne Migne passed away, and with nobody in the family interested in continuing the estate, the vineyard was auctioned off around 1990 or 1991. The Mignes’ son, who was in the car business, sold off the cellar of old vintages, which is why old bottles are incredibly rare (and those you can find now fetch hundreds of euros whenever they come up at auction). There were a few interested parties, including fellow Jurançon winemaker Charles Hours and actor Gérard Depardieu, who had visited the domaine several times and was suitably charmed. Most predicted that Hours would buy the estate; however, the successful bidder was Parisian caviste Michel Renaud. Rather than continuing the legacy, Renaud treated Clos Joliette as a part-time hobby, using pickers from his Armagnac vineyard to conduct the harvest; leaving barrels for five years without racking and topping them up only if necessary; then selling only a fraction of the production to a few friends and cellaring the remainder. Renaud died in 2015, leaving a wife, a daughter and her half-brother. As with all things administrative in France, inheritance laws are complicated so once again the fate of the domaine was in jeopardy. It became widely known that Clos Joliette was for sale, though despite its niche fame, there was no queue of prospective buyers - a situation that remains today. But what of the grapes? Vines don’t just stop growing! Once again, the spirit of the South West has prevailed. Our dear friend Jean-Marc Grussaute from Camin Larredya, also Jurançon, was offered the chance to farm and vinify Clos Joliette 2016 and 2017 vintages, side by side with his wines. Jean-Marc and his winemaker friends from the collective “A Bisto de Nas” (including Christine Dupuy who we represent) were able to buy all the barrels from 2010, 2012, 2013 in addition to the 2016 and 2017, all farmed and vinified themselves. The result has been an incredible selection of complex and aromatic off-dry wines, reflecting the reputation Antoine Gerbelle bestowed on the domaine as “the Romanee Conti of the South-West France”. What makes these wines so sought after is the combination of three unique aspects. First, its location. With only 1.85 hectares Clos Joliette sits at 300m altitude, on the slopes of the hill of Beauvallon (Commune of Jurancon). The vines were planted in 1929 by Madame Migné and exposed to the East and South-East in a natural amphitheater, allowing the grapes to capture the gentle morning sun, rather than afternoon heat. Second, an atypical terroir made of clay-silica, pudding stones, Ponto-Pliocene pebbles and crossed through by a vein of iron. Third, the wine itself - a single varietal 100% Petit Manseng, treated with minimal intervention throughout vinification, no fining or filtration, and long aging in oak barrels for 4 to 6 years. We might add a fourth aspect, being the mystic. There’s little to be said about this wine across the vastness of the internet. They are prized wines, with only 1000 bottles produced each year, sitting firmly in the ‘if you know, you know’ category. Clos Joliette is considered one of those wines one must try in a lifetime, and we are honoured to bring them to Australia. - Domaine Nudant | Ladoix-Serigny | Mosaique Wines
Domaine Nudant Ladoix-Serigny, Burgundy Sustainable Established in the 15th century, Domaine Nudant is located in Ladoix-Serigny. Fast forward to 2003, when Guillaume Nudant spearheaded a new generation making his debut for the Domaine. Today he has 16 hectares of vines in his care, spreading across the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits including prestigious terroir such as Grand Crus Corton-Charlemagne, Corton-Bressandes, Echezeaux, along with several Premiers Cru on the hill of Corton; Aloxe Corton “Les Valozières”, “La Coutière” or the monopole “Clos de la Boulotte”. In Ladoix near the cellar, they produce Ladoix village, Ladoix 1er cru “Les Gréchons”, “Les Buis”, “La Corvée”. Finally they also farm vineyards in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne Romanée, Volnay 1er cru “Les Santenots”, Puligny-Montrachet with the 1er cru “Les Folatières”, as well as a beautiful Meursault village. Phew! Young Guillaume has carved out his niche, following winemaking and viticultural practices to shine a light on the incredible terroir he is now the custodian of. This includes grating selection, yield control, regular ploughing of the vines, organic composting, copper treatments and sustainable farming without the use of herbicides. Discovering these wines is indeed a journey through Burgundy. They are impressive, honest expressions of place that continue to evolve in the bottle, whilst being approachable and moreish on release. Ladoix 1er Cru “Les Buis” Delicious Ladoix, bright with high precision and vibrancy. Made from a small 0.98 hectare, with 40 year old vineyard. This wine has a delicate nose with aromas of red fruits such as blackcurrants and cherries. Elegant aromatics, with a hint of earthiness. Limited production of approx. 5 500 bottles every year. With careful cellaring, enjoy up to 10 years old. Vosne Romanee From 0.94 hectares, located in the small village of Vosne-Romanée, with old vines that are more than 50 years. Made of low yield (37 hectoliters), this Pinot expresses itself beautifully with an intense colour and a nose made up of dark berries such as blackberries and blueberries. Powerful and still full of finesse, you will also get a touch of spice thanks to 20% new oak on the finish. Decant for an hour in its youth before enjoying, alternatively it will develop for 15 years. Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots (vine leased) Les Santenots vineyard is located in the southern part of Volnay, near the village of Meursault. The particular structure of the soil (limestone, gravel and marl) makes Les Santenots a very aromatic wine, full of blackberries, raspberries and subtle notes of oak. It’s an elegant wine, delicately complex and concentrated at the same time. Meursault (vine leased) Citrusy, with subtle notes of spice and vanilla. On the palate, it shows a deep sense of place through purity, minerality and a finer texture if compared to most super creamy Meursault. Impressive length and finish. - Domaine des Trouilleres | Auvergne | Mosaique Wines
DOMAINE DES TROUILLERES Auvergne Organic certified Volcanic soils, it turns out, are destined to follow Mikael Hyvert wherever he goes. Perhaps they have a natural pull that keeps Hyvert coming back. Either way, from the volcanoes of Tahiti that filled his youth, to the dormant rises of Auvergne, there’s no questioning Hyvert’s passion for this landscape. Growing up in Tahiti with a French father, and a family friend in the wine import trade, it was only a matter of time before Mikael would come to discover the pleasures of wine. When looking for a career path after graduating high school, it would only take a gentle nudge to point him in the direction of Bordeaux, and enrolling in Blanquefort viticulture school. And from here, the rest, as they say, is history. The natural wine bug bit hard during this time, as Mikael became more and more focused on these techniques. A friendship forged in Bordeaux with a Loire local then resulted in Mikael seeking out legends from the region, including Olivier Lemasson, Herve Villemade and Thierry Puzelat to work with and learn from. After an eventful vintage experience in Chile, Hyvert made his way back to the fertile learning grounds of the Loire and Bordeaux before an opportunity to make his own wine presented itself. Plans were already brewing to move to Languedoc with his archaeologist girlfriend, Camille, however the right fit was proving hard to find. Fate intervened when Camille was offered a 12 month contract in the Auvergne. The volcanic landscape reminded Mikael of his childhood in Tahiti and it wasn’t long before the winemaking potential of the region became apparent. While finding his feet in Auvergne with different domaines, fate again intervened through a chance meeting with winemaker Jean-Pierre Pradier, founder of the AOC Cotes d’Auvergne and owner of Domaine des Trouilleres. The connection between the two was immediate, with shared views on organic farming facilitating a friendship that would later lead to Pradier finding his successor in Mikael in 2016. The region is technically part of the Loire, where Mikael had already spent much time, and while it’s not as well known as other areas of the Loire, Auvergne has a long, storied history of resistance spirit. In fact, it used to be one of the biggest wine regions in France, with 45,000ha under vine before a combination of Phylloxera and population movement decimated the region. Today, Auvergne is enjoying a renaissance with young, dynamic winemakers making the most of more affordable land and excellent growing conditions for organic wines. The climate tends to be a dry mediterranean one, with continental influence and a mountainous landscape to provide protection from inclement weather - ideal for minimal intervention farming. Domaine des Trouilleres produces gamay, chardonnay and pinot noir in this climate, on a tiny 5.8 ha situated between 380 - 500m altitude. This pocket size vineyard planted at 5,500 vines per ha makes only 35,000 bottles yearly, so we consider ourselves very lucky to get an allocation! In the winery, Mikael follows natural winemaking practices to complement the organic approach in the vineyard. This means no sulphur use during vinification, with a small amount only used during bottling. The resulting wines are honest, lively reflections of their volcanic terroir and highlight the dynamism of this young producer. - Chateau du Prada | Bas-Armagnac | Mosaique Wines
Chateau du prada Bas-Armagnac South-West France The region of Gascony is best experienced in the depths of winter, as the best produce here lends itself to blustery weather, long lunches and crackling open fires. There is the decadent foie gras and roasted duck of course, however the real jewel in the crown is without doubt your secret weapon to digestion, Armagnac. Moreover, due to the warm hospitality of the locals, a nip of Armagnac is no longer just an option- it becomes a necessity. Chateau du Prada is situated in Labastide d’Armagnac, a tiny village in the heart of Bas Armagnac. It’s one of those buildings with an impressive past- built in 1764 by Victor Louis (who designed the Bordeaux Grand Theater) for Phillipe De Bouglon’s ancestors. Today, it is part of a protected historic monument, making and housing the mono-varietal Armagnac, which has become the De Bouglon signature for centuries. Although there are many provisions in place to ensure all Armagnac is qualitative, there are a few one per centers that elevate Chateau du Prada above the rest. This includes minimum 10 years cask ageing, and the man himself, Phillipe, bottling directly from the cask to the bottle for each order. Customer service is alive and well in this part of France! - Domaine Marius Bielle | Mosaique Wines
DOMAINE MARIUS BIELLE Lalande-de-Pomerol, Bordeaux Organic The face of Bordeaux is changing. For a region so steeped in wine history, the pace is perhaps slower than other regions, however the Bordeaux our parents knew is quietly beginning to share the spotlight with a group of energised and talented new blood, including Damien Bielle of Domaine Marius Bielle. We met Damien around a table of laughter, pizzas and of course wine. This unique character was introduced to us by Olivier from Chateau Gombaude-Guillot, both young rising stars of Bordeaux who became fast friends. A passion for wine was an obvious shared connection, which has evolved into sharing a warehouse, however they also discovered a joint love of MMA fighting. Word is they’ve even fashioned a simple yet effective gym and a fighting ring in the warehouse! Domaine Marius Bielle was founded in the 1940s by Damien’s grandfather, the domaine’s namesake, in Lalande-de-Pomerol. In this area, a grape maligned in other wine growing regions is seen as the king. Here, Merlot rules them all. There are no blends, the wines are 100% Merlot, a ‘one terroir, one cepage’ approach championed by Burgundy. It is this approach that allows Damien to focus on making wines that highlight the nuances of this grape. Graduating as an agronomist engineer, he went onto oenology school in Bordeaux and then worked for some of the most prestigious producers in the world - Chateau Petrus (Pomerol) and Chateau Cheval Blanc (Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classe), before finally deciding to return to the family estate to create his own expression in 2020. The process starts on the famous Pomerol soils of sand and gravel, with 13 hectares of organically farmed vineyard (certified 2021). Weaved in between the oceans of surrounding vines, you’ll find the Domaine Marius Bielle ecosystem - breaking the monotony with trees, grass and flowers growing in the vineyard, freeing space to create orchards, vegetable gardens and allowing a few animals in the vines. When vintage rolls around, the grapes are handpicked and sorted, before maceration by infusion, and a slow natural fermentation with vinification occuring in stainless steel tanks. Like a painter in his workshop, it’s a moment of focus and presence - creating a sketch of the vintage. The ‘slow but steady’ ethos continues through to aging, using concrete tanks and amphoras to gently and softly raise his Merlot. Damien grew up in contact with les “vins d’avant”, an old school style of wine in the best of ways, those wines that took the time of aging in the cellar and then in bottles before being released. This has without doubt influenced his winemaking, insisting the wines reveal themselves in time, finding their complexity along the way and without the use of sulphur, filtering or fining. We are excited to be bringing these vibrant and contemporary wines to Australia. It’s Damien’s wish that these Bordeaux wines that are opened at tables filled with laughter and good friends, enjoyed with some quality meat on the barbecue, not to be intimidating and tasted in suits and silence. He wants his wines to bring conversation. Having tasted his line up and a range of spectacular back vintages, we’re sure they will. - Chateau des Rontets | Pouilly Fuissé | Mosaique Wines
CHATEAU DES RONTETS Pouilly-Fuissé, Burgundy Organic Home is where the vines are, as it turned out, for Claire Gazeau. After pursuing a life outside of wine, working in architecture in Milan and meeting her now husband doing so, the vines of Gazeau’s family vineyard in Pouilly-Fuissés eventually called her home. Thirty years later, Chateau des Rontets is producing its best wines yet. The estate was founded in the 1700s, taken over by Claire’s great-great-grandfather, François Varambon in the mid 1800s. The estate holds many treasured family memories, and upon moving there in 1995 Claire and her husband Fabio saw it as a wonderful place to raise a family of their own. It’s safe to say the 7.5 hectares of vines were not thriving when Claire and Fabio took the reins of the estate. From day one, the pair set upon farming organically to repair the health and biodiversity of the vines, and in 2005 attained their Ecocert organic certification. Organic farming, according to Claire and Fabio, is the best way for their vines to express the vocation of their place. Ploughing and the avoidance of chemical weeding allows the root system to absorb the mineral elements of the soil, exploring the unique layers of limestone and granite that come with straddling the Burgundy/Beaujolais divide. Above all, abolishing all synthetic chemical products allows Chateau des Rontets to respect the environment and the natural expressions of the living ecosystem, but also to preserve the health of their family, workers, neighbours and that of those who drink their wines. The main estate is situated on the top of the hill which closes the valley of Fuissé towards the south. Sitting at an altitude of 350 metres above sea level, the daily temperature range here is key to gradual ripening and the preservation of good acidity even in the warmest and earliest vintages. This is where the grapes producing the Pouilly-Fuissé cuvées Clos Varambon and Les Birbettes are grown. The bedrock is composed of hard limestone from the Jurassic period, with layers of silt and silty clay, and a high presence of stones and silica. These characteristics guarantee very good drainage and the development of the roots, which can burrow down between the stones, following their cracks. There are 5.5 hectares of vines within the Clos, planted on a light slope increasing gradually as it approaches the woods separating them from the village of Fuissé. Just 500m south of the Clos sits the revered Pierrefolle (or crazy stone) vineyard, producing the Pouilly-Fuissé cuvée of the same name. Although situated so closely, and at the same altitude, wines from Pierrefolle are completely different from their brethren. Being further south, the bedrock here is granitic, the soil is much deeper and composed only of quite thick silts. Its eastern exposure provides shelter from the north wind and tends to be slightly warmer, leading to a more rapid ripening process and less acid in the grapes. When it comes to vintage, all grapes are hand harvested, then, in the winery, Claire and Fabio continue to let their wines take a relatively uninterrupted course. Alcoholic fermentations are made only with natural yeasts, without any addition of sugar or acid and without enzymes, and the malolactic fermentations are never inhibited or artificially stopped. This practice can lead to long fermentations, often lasting several months, increasing the aromatic complexity of the wines and amplifying their expression of place. One part of the winemaking journey that is especially important at Chateau des Rontets is the extended lees ageing. Lees have a fundamental role in the specificity and texture of these wines, as the team chooses to let the wines sit on lees, without stirring, to take maximum advantage of the autolysis while limiting the tendency of reduction and ensuring the extraction of glycerol. Lastly, there is no fining or filtering of the wines. Instead, to help the wines settle before bottling, ageing in barrels takes place across two winters - a rare, yet effective approach. - Domaine Landron Chartier | Muscadet | Mosaique Wines
DOMAINE LANDRON CHARTIER Muscadet Organic certified What’s the first grape varietal that comes to mind when we say Loire Valley? We bet its Sauvignon Blanc – which is delicious. However, there’s more to discover in this region. Domaine Landron Chartier is a wonderful example of a small producer continuing to work with lesser known grapes which equally represent the terroir of the Loire. Third-generation winemaker Bernard Landron initially began his career alongside with his brother Jo in the heart of Muscadet Sèvre et Maine area. In 2002 Bernard moved to Ancenis in the village of St Géréon, about 35 min drive from Nantes, and was joined by his eldest son Benoît in 2008. Benoît had returned to the family vineyard after completing his degree in viticulture and oenology, facilitating a conversation to organic practices in 2009. The family now farm around 25 hectares, with a patchwork of vineyards mostly situated around the towns of Ligne and Udon planted with a mix of Melon de Bourgogne, Folle Blanche, Pinot Gris, Gamay and Cabernet Franc. The decomposed volcanic material in the soils, along with a moderate climate and ocean winds to reduce humidity, results in a hallmark freshness to the wines. To ensure both the terroir and fruit purity are front and centre, extreme care during the winemaking process is followed – from the vineyard through to the cellar. Vines nurtured with organic farming practices are hand harvested and vinified separately based on terroir with a natural yeast fermentation. There’s minimal intervention in the cellar, with light to no filtration and low to no sulphur added depending the cuvees. The result is spectacularly pure and vibrant Muscadet, both at an entry level and at a precise, complex cru level. Expect textural, generous notes of fresh quince and white peach pinned together by a terroir driven acidity that will leave you begging for another glass. www.landronchartier.fr Shop wines Quick View 2022 Domaine Landron Chartier, ‘Pinot Gris Aussi’ Maceration Price $49.00 GST Included Quick View 2019 Domaine Landron Chartier, AOC Muscadet Cru ‘Le Bois Mouchet’ Price $85.00 GST Included Quick View 2019 Domaine Landron Chartier, AOC Muscadet Cru ‘Le Ponceau’ Price $85.00 GST Included Quick View 2019 Domaine Landron Chartier, AOC Muscadet Cru ‘La Grande Ouche’ Price $85.00 GST Included Load More
- Domaine Olivier Morin | Chitry Burgundy | Mosaique Wines
Domaine Olivier Morin Chitry, Burgundy Organic non-certified The Domaine Morin has belonged to the Morin family since 1650, and even though the family was deeply rooted in winemaking, after studying wine in Beaune, Olivier pursued his own path far from the vines. He worked ten years as a radio announcer during the day and DJ at night. In 1992 Olivier was finally attracted back to the land of his ancestors, taking over the vineyard joining his brother Christian. Chitry is located 12 km south-west of the village of Chablis, in the North of Burgundy. Both Chitry and Chablis share similar Kimmeridgian limestone soils, as well as the grape variety with Chardonnay, so it's not a surprise that they make wine with a similar style! Domaine Morin is well and truly still a family run operation, with Olivier's wife Nelly joining the brothers in the pursuit of pure, character driven wine. The vineyard has now grown to 12 hectares, planted primarily with Chardonnay (50%), as well a Pinot Noir (25%) and Aligoté (25%). Most of these vineyards grow on picturesque rolling slopes, with old vines roots digging deep to express the minerality of Chitry's unique terroirs. Regarding viticulture, Morin respects a natural approach using natural compost as fertiliser, and a chemical/ herbicide free zone, allowing grass to grow between the vines. Soils are worked regularly, so the roots plunge deeply in the Kimmeridgian limestone soils. Regular cropping, detailed trellising, and systematically removing of buds are a few other manual works done at the vineyard, along with hand harvested of the grapes comes vintage time Additionally, all vinification is done with minimal sulphur added, using only natural yeasts and fermented in tank to preserve freshness and purity. Then the wines ages on lees in tank, and bottled with no filtration. Morin Chardonnay is energetic, precise with bright fruit and truly express the mineral soils found there. His Pinots show purity of fruit, with savoury notes - above all showing great character and value. In short, Olivier Morin produces spectacular wines for the money. - Domaine Garon | Cote-Rotie | Mosaique Wines
Domaine garon Cote-Rotie, Cotes du Rhone Organic non-certified We can all agree, Cote-Rotie in northern Rhone is one of, if not the spiritual home of Syrah. The Garon family certainly thinks so, having based themselves here, in Ampuis, since the 15th century. The family patriach Jean Garon was born here in 1475, battling hard times and growing grapes for a merchant (Guigal), along with farming fruit. Fast forward a few centuries to 1982, when Jean François and Carmen Garon replanted vines in the abandoned slopes of Cote-Rotie. "It wasn't bad for the vineyards to rest a hundred years between plantings" according to, Jean-Francois! In 2003, Jean-Francois' sons Kevin and Fabien joined the estate, taking the wines to yet another level. Kevin said “every year, the wine is different. A vintage is often full of memories, a bottle always captures a little bit of the story. In the Cote Rotie more than anywhere we can say that the wine is made in the vineyard, in the middle of the steep and dangerous terraces.” With about 8.3 hectares, the Garons farm the land organically and even use the horse. Weeding, like most of the vineyard work, is done by hand. This care taken in the vineyard is reflected in wines of great expression and personality. There is no over extraction, with gentle and long vinification bringing finesse. They are seeking a more Burgundian style of Côte-Rôtie. Cotes du Rhone “La Part des Vivants” A name which means the wine left for us to drink after the angel share. The grapes come from Ampuis area, declassified Cru Cairanne and also Rasteau fruits. Mostly de-stemmed, traditional vinification. 70% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 10% Carignan. Aged in very old barrels of 228 litres. Low sulphur. Black fruits, concentrated wild berries, spices, dark chocolate and a slight earthiness. Beautiful acidity and pure with a saline finish. “Les Grandes Parcelles” IGP Collines Rhodaniennes 100% Syrah, affectionately referred to as ababy Cote Rotie, sometimes including an amount of declassified fruit. Hand harvested, followed by traditional vinification. Elegant, intense with dark cherry, small berries, fine tannins, long balanced finish. La Sybarine A blend of 25 year old Syrah from plots on decomposed granite from the “Cote Rotie Blond area” (Lieu dit Goutay and Mollard). Handpicked, temperature controlled ferment ans roughly 80% destemmed. Daily punching down and pumping over during alcoholic fermentation, followed by 15 days maceration and 14 months in old French oak barrels. Aromas of blackberry and strawberry with violet, citrus notes as well as grilled bacon. Vibrant fruit on the palate, with rich and round with lush red fruits and blood orange notes lifted by good acidity. Approachable power, the finish is long with deep red fruit ending with a dark earthy minerality. Drink young and over the next ten years. The Garon also farm: Les Triotes (schist blond area), Les Rochins (Brune area next to La Landonne), Lancement and delicious white IGP Viognier and impressive Condrieu. "As I wrote last year, the running of Domaine Garon has passed largely to sons Kévin and Fabien Garon, who came on board at the domaine starting in 2003. While quality was reliable in the 2000s, since 2010, everything appears to have been on a steady upward trajectory, with the 2015 being the finest wines I've tasted from the estate, and magical wines produced in both 2017 and 2018. Lovers of pure, classical Côte Rôtie need to get on this estate's bandwagon ASAP!" - Jeb Dunnuck . - Domaine Laguerre | Roussillon | Mosaique Wines
DOMAINE LAGUERRE Roussillon Organic certified and Biodynamic, in-conversion Domaine Laguerre, is one of the finest domains in the Roussillon, with high-altitude mountain vineyards producing vibrant wines of terroir. The Domaine is run by the enthusiastic and energetic Éric Laguerre, who took over his family's 40 hectares of vineyards in 1999. Resolving to go back to basics and grow / make wine as naturally as possible from the start, Eric and his wife Corinne restored and replanted most of the vine-land and bottled their first vintage in 2001. The result is organically-farmed and naturally-made artisanal Roussillon wines, offering superb wines and incredible value. A visit to Eric in the tiny village of Saint Martin de Fenouillet (not far from Maury) requires steep climbs through a mountain pass up to the highest, cooler climate vineyards in the Roussillon (500 meters elevation). Here you’ll find plantings of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Cabernet for red and, Grenache Blanc, Rolle, Roussanne, Marssanne Macabeu for whites, with an average vine age of 40 years old. The vines sit on acidic terroir made of gneiss and broken-down granite with some pockets of quartz and decomposed granite. These soils combined with the cool climate, the “tramontane” winds, low yields and Éric's superb farming, create distinctive bright, balanced wine with freshness, fruit definition, excellent mineral tension that deepens with time in bottle. In the vineyards, organic and biodynamic practices are observed, with certification awarded for the former and soon for the latter. Harvest in this area is typically late for the region, starting at the end of September and lasting until mid-October. The grapes are hand-harvested in the early morning to ensure freshness, with sorting done in the vines. The grapes are then taken to the cellar and fermented with natural yeast, and vinified separately in vessels such as fibre tanks, concrete tanks and old oak demi-muid. Wines from Roussillon are often undiscovered gems. The whites combine purity along with weight and ripe fruit flavours. The reds on the other hand are often high in alcohol (over 14% natural) but not heavy. “Le Ciste Blanc” This white blend is one of the most interesting whites of southern France, comprising Grenache Blanc, Rolle (Vermentino), Marsanne, Roussanne, and Macabeu. "Eos Blanc" This wine is a rewarding discovery for anyone seeking an intriguing wine of terroir at an affordable price. 65% Grenache Blanc, 35% Macabeu. The increased percentages of Macabeu have made this lovely wine even more distinctive. "Eos Rouge" An elegant and brighter red, blend of 80% Grenache from 40-year-old gobelet-trained vines, with some Carignan and Syrah. “Domaine Laguerre, in the Roussillon. An absolute gem. Superb every day wine, you can age 10+ years, for a ridiculous price. Superb farming in the altitude vineyards above Perpignan, old vines gardened with love, grapes handled with dedicated care. How can this vigneron not be more revered for offering such treats at such value. White and red. Entry level cuvée or « grande cuvée ». It makes me so happy and excited to be able to open his wines at Racines NY. A treat.” Pascaline Lepeltier MS www. domainelaguerre.com White grapes: Grenache Blanc, Rolle, Marsanne, Roussanne, Macabeu Red grapes: Grenache Noir, Syrah, Carignan, Mourvedre, Cabernet Sauvignon Shop wines Quick View 2022 Domaine Laguerre, Vin de France 'LAG' red Price $46.00 GST Included Quick View 2023 Domaine Laguerre, AOC Cotes du Roussillon 'EOS Rosé' Price $44.00 GST Included Quick View NV Domaine Laguerre, Vin de France 'Oxy' Rancio sec (Sherry style) Price $86.00 GST Included Quick View 2022 Domaine Laguerre, AOC Cotes du Roussillon 'Le Ciste Rouge' Price $63.00 GST Included Load More

We are excited to share with you a mosaic of French wine styles, grape varieties and French wine regions including Champagne, Burgundy, Chablis, Sancerre, Jura, Beaujolais, Rhone, Bordeaux and the South-West of France where our family Domaine Chai Saint Etienne was established in 1778. Twice a year, we venture to France to hunt for the next rising star. We visit vineyards in all corners of the country and meeting with winemakers who have dedicated their lives to their crafts, and respect the land they farm above all else. During these trips, we also visit our stable of producers to taste through the upcoming vintage releases – often barrel tastings followed by a hearty lunch, or long dinner (it is France after all). The aim of our visits is to always ensure we are bringing great wine, sustainably farmed and at a fair price back to you. We proudly supply to many of Australia’s best wine bars, restaurants and independent retailers, and deliver direct to your door with Australia-wide free shipping for orders over $250.
