  • Domaine Turenne | Cotes de Provence | Mosaique Wines

A gem in the heart of Provence, Domaine Turenne is located northeast of Bandol in the heart of the Triangle d’Or in the Côtes de Provence, between Cuers and Pierrefeu (Var). In 1990, Philippe and Cécile Benezet took the reins, realising their dream of crafting their own wines, rather than sending the estate fruit to the co-op. Domaine Turenne Côtes de Provence Organic certified REVUE DES VINS DE FRANCE: Domaine Turenne ‘Camille’ rosé “60 best rosés of France” RVF (N° 601) When you’ve watched and celebrated your own family produce a much-loved Rosé, one that was the first wine you imported, it’s hard to consider opening the door to another. And yet, after a long seven year search, we’re delighted to welcome another winemaking family with the same exacting standards - Domaine Turenne. A gem in the heart of Provence, Domaine Turenne is located northeast of Bandol in the heart of the Triangle d’Or in the Côtes de Provence, between Cuers and Pierrefeu (Var). This family-owned estate has been a fixture in the region for over a century, named in homage to the familial connection to the Chocolaterie de Sedan which produces Turenne Chocolate. In 1990, Philippe and Cécile Benezet took the reins, realising their dream of crafting their own wines, rather than sending the estate fruit to the co-op. Their dedication paid off in 1994 when the estate's cellars were established, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey. The now 20 hectares of vineyards at Domaine de Turenne are planted to classic regional varieties including Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Rolle, and Petite Clairette, with an average age of 40 years, with some vines dating back over a century. They are a testament to the marriage of tradition and innovation, and proudly bear organic certification (Ecocert), with a growing commitment to biodynamic practices. The secret to Turenne's exceptional wines lies in the unique terroir of the vineyards. The alluvial cone's stony clay-limestone soils, and well-drained sandy subsoil with small stones known as "Gavroches" bring a distinct minerality and impeccable drainage to the vines. The result is wines that carry the unmistakable signature of their origin. Cécile and Philippe Benezet approach their work with thoughtful care in the vineyard and cellar, aiming to produce wines that are sincere, respectful of their terroir, and as natural as possible. For them, winemaking is an alchemy of choices, craftsmanship, and principles, creating healthy and balanced wines that capture the essence of their land. When vintage rolls around, winemaking is a harmonious blend of traditional practices and modern techniques. Grapes are hand-harvested in the morning to preserve their freshness and to exercise better control over the initial stages of vinification. Fermentations are carried out with indigenous yeasts, with techniques adapted to the requirements of each vintage. This approach results in well-balanced wines, free from excessive acidity or sugar levels. Domaine de Turenne is more than a winery; it's a philosophy that seeks to balance tradition and innovation while respecting the essence of Provence - honouring Rosé with a more vinous style, and celebrating the often forgotten white and red wines of the region alongside it. The wines are an invitation to share in the dedication and passion of the Benezet family, and every bottle reflects the hours spent in the vineyard and cellar. They are wines that are honest and elegant, without pretension or artifice. They are wines for sharing, wines for celebrating and to be celebrated. http://domaineturenne.com/ Shop Wines Quick View 2022 Domaine Turenne Cotes de Provence 'Antoine' white Price $47.00 GST Included Quick View 2022 Domaine Turenne Cotes de Provence 'Camille' rosé Price $47.00 GST Included Quick View 2021 Domaine Turenne Vin de France 'Histoire d'Haut' light red Price $42.00 GST Included Quick View 2022 Domaine Turenne Cotes de Provence 'Bastien' red Price $47.00 GST Included Load More

  • Domaine Francois & Julien Pinon | Vouvray | Mosaique Wines

Importer and distributor of organic, biodynamic and sustainable French wines from Champagne, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Bordeaux and beyond. DOMAINE JULIEN & FRANCOIS PINON Vouvray Organic certified It’s a rare phenomenon that the Wine Spectator, The New York Times and The Robert Parker Guide are all in agreement, yet it’s a feat managed by Julien and Francois Pinon. Mentioned in the same breath as Huet by Asimov, considered benchmark chenin blanc by Wine Spectator and the producer of ‘ethereal’ wines according to Parker’s outlet. Happily, we can confirm, these are wines deserving of their praise. Established in 1786, the estate of Julien and Francois Pinon has been built up over eight generations and now covers 13.5 hectares in the Vallée de Cousse. Today, father and son duo, François and Julien, continue the tradition of ‘old school’ winemaking with a contemporary edge, passed down when François took the reins in 1987. Leaving behind a career in child psychology, François took over the estate from his father, and focused on emphasising ecologically friendly vineyard and cellar practices. The family operation now includes his son, Julien, who also changed careers, from city planning, to join his father in the cellar. Sadly, Francois and his father both passed away in 2021. The wines are recognised as some of the very best in the region, a reflection of the dedication of the family to their craft. To allow the rich and diverse terroir to sing, Julien and Francois committed to farming organically, with Ecocert Organic certification awarded in 2003. These practices include using organic treatments when needed and only in small doses, working the clay, limestone and flint soils mechanically and banning the use of pesticides. The vineyards are mainly comprised of chenin blanc, grolleau and cot, over 14ha with an average vine age of 50 years. When the time comes, the grapes are hand harvested over three weeks, by a team of 30 to allow for optimal grape selection. As a result, the grapes come into the winery as pristine whole bunches. The first pick will always be the sparkling wines, followed by the dry, and then slightly sweeter wines. In special years when the conditions are right, botrytis affected grapes will be picked last to create the winery’s sweetest wines. After being pressed, the juice is stored in large vats for 12-24 hours, while the solid matter settles to the bottom of the tank. When the juice is clear, ferment occurs without the addition of yeast. The wines are then housed in Pinon’s spectacular cellars, tunneled into hillside rock of the hillside, in a mixture of old oak barrels and stainless steel tanks to juggle the balancing act of still and sparkling winemaking. The wines remain on their fine lees until Easter. After one rack and a filtration, they are bottled over the course of April. Forget the chocolate eggs, we’d much prefer the Easter Bunny deliver these benchmark Vouvray to our door! • Domaine de Brin | Gaillac | Mosaique Wines

Damien Bonnet took over the family Domaine in 2008, his understanding of this environment is evident as he can reel off the smallest details of the surrounding 10 hectares. He wasted no time gaining organic certification and experimenting with concrete and amphora to produce a natural style of wine, domaine de brin Gaillac, South-West France Organic certified The Gaillac region is undoubtedly one of France’s oldest, and fast becoming it’s most exciting. Leading the charge is Domaine de Brin, with a young gun winemaker and a revival of rare varieties. Damien Bonnet took over the family Domaine in 2008, his understanding of this environment is evident as he can reel off the smallest details of the surrounding 10 hectares. He wasted no time gaining organic certification and experimenting with concrete and amphora to produce a natural style of wine, taking biodynamic principals and lunar calendars into the process. These were significant changes for Damien and his parents, moving the farm from selling to the local coop and polyculture; to bottling and selling their own wines. South facing vines are finding their expression in calcareous and white clay soils. Sitting on the 285-metre plateau on the right bank of the Tarn river, Gaillac benefits of both Mediterranean and Atlantic unique influence. Vineyard wise, Damien is using natural weeding methods, working the soil between the vines. When needed, they use organic fertiliser including horse beans and oats to enrich the soils. His aim for the vines is to obtain an equilibrium allowing a low yield of 20-35 hl/ha with healthy and perfectly ripe grapes. Each grape variety is manually harvested at its optimum maturation. The grapes are turned into wine using natural yeasts. The maturing takes place at a slow pace according to the rhythm of the seasons, in concrete and large format old oak that is an essential part of his winemaking style, along with minimising the use of sulphites. Pierres Blanches This white blend aged in old barrel, displays apple and hazelnut aromas with oxidative sherry-like notes. La Vie en Rosé is a heady, aromatic showcase of strawberries, grapefruit, lychee, as well as blueberries with a lot of texture. Vendemia The medium bodied red Vendemia is ripe with crunchy tannins and notes of blackcurrants. Amphore This cuvee aged in amphora is very vibrant and bright with spicy red berries and pure velvety finish. • Domaine Raphael Chopin | Beaujolais | Mosaique Wines

Young Raphael Chopin is rapidly becoming one of the most promissing Beaujolais producer from his vineyard in Lantigné. In conversion to organic Raphael benefits from older vineyards including vines in Regnié and Morgon. Domaine Raphael Chopin Beaujolais Organic, in-conversion Beaujolais represents 18,000 hectares of vines, with this Beaujolais producer only farming 5 of them. Raphael Chopin, as humble as he is, shares an artistic talent just like his namesake. It was perhaps meant to be that he became a winemaker, auspiciously born on November 21st - the celebration of Beaujolais Nouveau. Add to this, winemaking was already in his blood, having a winemaker grandfather. With the encouragement of his mother and grandmother, Raphael proudly and painstakingly revived his grandfather's vineyard, restoring it to something rather special. After studying in France, Raphael dreamed of California, but vintage was at the same time as in Beaujolais, so Australia came naturally as the place to go for a vintage stint. He then returned to Beaujolais, bringing grandfather's estate back to life with the beautiful 2009 vintage. Chopin's original vineyard in Lantignié is a beautiful mix of 28 year old young vines, planted in 1989, as well as some rare older 110 year old vines planted in 1905, with 100% Gamay as the only red grape allowed in Beaujolais. It is from this La Savoye vineyard that the Beaujolais-Villages is made from. This pocket size vineyard produces just 11,000 bottles, with Lantigné’s vintners working on a project with the AOC board to become the 11th Beaujolais, Cru and the first Beaujolais Cru to be 100% certified. Extending the family holdings, Chopin now also own small holdings in Morgon and Régnié, creating wines to express these diverse terroirs. Raphael farm the vineyard organically, working towards certification. This means no use of chemicals, instead he uses essential oils, copper and limited levels of sulphur. He is tilling the soil, hand harvesting and sorting, essentially managing his small vineyard like he would a precious garden. The result is simply delicious, with purity of fruit as the trademark. • Domaine Olivier Morin | Chitry Burgundy | Mosaique Wines

In 1992 Olivier was finally attracted back to the land of his ancestors, taking over the vineyard joining his brother Christian. Chitry is located 12 km south-west of the village of Chablis, in the North of Burgundy. Domaine Olivier Morin Chitry, Burgundy Organic non-certified The Domaine Morin has belonged to the Morin family since 1650, and even though the family was deeply rooted in winemaking, after studying wine in Beaune, Olivier pursued his own path far from the vines. He worked ten years as a radio announcer during the day and DJ at night. In 1992 Olivier was finally attracted back to the land of his ancestors, taking over the vineyard joining his brother Christian. Chitry is located 12 km south-west of the village of Chablis, in the North of Burgundy. Both Chitry and Chablis share similar Kimmeridgian limestone soils, as well as the grape variety with Chardonnay, so it's not a surprise that they make wine with a similar style! Domaine Morin is well and truly still a family run operation, with Olivier's wife Nelly joining the brothers in the pursuit of pure, character driven wine. The vineyard has now grown to 12 hectares, planted primarily with Chardonnay (50%), as well a Pinot Noir (25%) and Aligoté (25%). Most of these vineyards grow on picturesque rolling slopes, with old vines roots digging deep to express the minerality of Chitry's unique terroirs. Regarding viticulture, Morin respects a natural approach using natural compost as fertiliser, and a chemical/ herbicide free zone, allowing grass to grow between the vines. Soils are worked regularly, so the roots plunge deeply in the Kimmeridgian limestone soils. Regular cropping, detailed trellising, and systematically removing of buds are a few other manual works done at the vineyard, along with hand harvested of the grapes comes vintage time Additionally, all vinification is done with minimal sulphur added, using only natural yeasts and fermented in tank to preserve freshness and purity. Then the wines ages on lees in tank, and bottled with no filtration. Morin Chardonnay is energetic, precise with bright fruit and truly express the mineral soils found there. His Pinots show purity of fruit, with savoury notes - above all showing great character and value. In short, Olivier Morin produces spectacular wines for the money. • Domaine des Trouilleres | Auvergne | Mosaique Wines

Les Athletes du Vin is a collective of some of finest organic Loire Valley producers. Established in 2016, their objective is to make great value wines for wine lovers across the world, highlighting the appellations and grape varietals that contribute to the diversity and beauty of the Loire valley. DOMAINE DES TROUILLERES Auvergne Organic certified Volcanic soils, it turns out, are destined to follow Mikael Hyvert wherever he goes. Perhaps they have a natural pull that keeps Hyvert coming back. Either way, from the volcanoes of Tahiti that filled his youth, to the dormant rises of Auvergne, there’s no questioning Hyvert’s passion for this landscape. Growing up in Tahiti with a French father, and a family friend in the wine import trade, it was only a matter of time before Mikael would come to discover the pleasures of wine. When looking for a career path after graduating high school, it would only take a gentle nudge to point him in the direction of Bordeaux, and enrolling in Blanquefort viticulture school. And from here, the rest, as they say, is history. The natural wine bug bit hard during this time, as Mikael became more and more focused on these techniques. A friendship forged in Bordeaux with a Loire local then resulted in Mikael seeking out legends from the region, including Olivier Lemasson, Herve Villemade and Thierry Puzelat to work with and learn from. After an eventful vintage experience in Chile, Hyvert made his way back to the fertile learning grounds of the Loire and Bordeaux before an opportunity to make his own wine presented itself. Plans were already brewing to move to Languedoc with his archaeologist girlfriend, Camille, however the right fit was proving hard to find. Fate intervened when Camille was offered a 12 month contract in the Auvergne. The volcanic landscape reminded Mikael of his childhood in Tahiti and it wasn’t long before the winemaking potential of the region became apparent. While finding his feet in Auvergne with different domaines, fate again intervened through a chance meeting with winemaker Jean-Pierre Pradier, founder of the AOC Cotes d’Auvergne and owner of Domaine des Trouilleres. The connection between the two was immediate, with shared views on organic farming facilitating a friendship that would later lead to Pradier finding his successor in Mikael in 2016. The region is technically part of the Loire, where Mikael had already spent much time, and while it’s not as well known as other areas of the Loire, Auvergne has a long, storied history of resistance spirit. In fact, it used to be one of the biggest wine regions in France, with 45,000ha under vine before a combination of Phylloxera and population movement decimated the region. Today, Auvergne is enjoying a renaissance with young, dynamic winemakers making the most of more affordable land and excellent growing conditions for organic wines. The climate tends to be a dry mediterranean one, with continental influence and a mountainous landscape to provide protection from inclement weather - ideal for minimal intervention farming. Domaine des Trouilleres produces gamay, chardonnay and pinot noir in this climate, on a tiny 5.8 ha situated between 380 - 500m altitude. This pocket size vineyard planted at 5,500 vines per ha makes only 35,000 bottles yearly, so we consider ourselves very lucky to get an allocation! In the winery, Mikael follows natural winemaking practices to complement the organic approach in the vineyard. This means no sulphur use during vinification, with a small amount only used during bottling. The resulting wines are honest, lively reflections of their volcanic terroir and highlight the dynamism of this young producer. • Domaine Louis Chenu et filles | Savigny-Les-Beaune | Mosaique Wines

Now in its fifth generation, sisters Juliette and Caroline are a dynamic duo firmly at the helm of the 9.5ha of vines in Savigny-Les-Beaune, composed mostly of 40 to 60 years old vines. They are proudly continuing the family commitment to producing quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, considered as some of the best ‘under the radar’ wines from the Côte de Beaune. DOMAINE LOUIS CHENU & FILLES Savigny Les Beaune, Burgundy Organic When first buying parcels of vines in Savigny-les-Beaune, Burgundy in 1914, Louis Chenu began a family winemaking dynasty. Now in its fifth generation, sisters Juliette and Caroline are a dynamic duo firmly at the helm of the 9.5ha of vines, composed mostly of 40 to 60 years old vines. They are proudly continuing the family commitment to producing quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, considered as some of the best ‘under the radar’ wines from the Côte de Beaune. From humble beginnings largely selling grapes to negociants, the Domaine and indeed the terroir of Savigny-les-Beaune are now making a splash. It all starts with respect for the organic certified vineyards, working the vines as the season demands - never too much, never too little. When the time comes, grape sorting occurs on the vines, before they are hand harvested and bought into the winery. From here, the winemaking process doesn’t deviate too much from tradition, starting with de-stemming and crushing of the grapes and cold-macerated for a few days, which are then trodden down on a daily basis. The wines then go through a natural fermentation with native yeasts, and are aged in the cellar for over 18 months. The process for the white wines includes immediate pressing, racking and then stored in barrels for fermentation. Unlike the red wines, the white wines are then filtered before bottling (which occurs a year later). The result of this care in the vineyard and observance of tradition in the winery results in wines truly reflecting their place - the Premier Crus of Savigny-les-Beaune. These include “Aux Clous”, “Les Hauts-Jarrons”, “Les Lavières” or “Les Talmettes” wines, along with a rare white Savigny-les-Beaune Village wine. • Chateau Tire Pe | Bordeaux | Mosaique Wines

Chateau Tire Pe is owned by David and Hélène Barrault, they took over this small vineyard in 1997. Blessed with rich clay and limestone soils, this vineyard possesses fantastic southern exposure and overlooks the Gironde River. CHATEAU TIRE PE Bordeaux Organic certified Chateau Tire Pe is owned by David and Hélène Barrault, they took over this small vineyard in 1997. Blessed with rich clay and limestone soils, this vineyard possesses fantastic southern exposure and overlooks the Garonne River. The Chateau takes its name from a colourful local tale about what small animals “leave behind” before climbing the Tire Pé hill. We’ll leave that to your imagination. The vineyard is composed of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, along with some rare local grapes called Castets, Mancin des Palus and vines of Pineau d’Aunis originating from the Loire. The Barrault’s farm vines of 10-35 years old organically, a practice they started to implement in 2008, becoming officially Ecocert certified since the 2014 vintage. They also practice some biodynamic principles, as well as ploughing the vines with horses. The latter fits in perfectly with equestrian centre which Hélène is running at the farm, ensuring animals, like vines, are a big part of Tire Pe. All grapes are harvested by hand and destemmed, with each plot harvested and fermented separately with natural yeast. Great care is taken to gently extract the supple fruit and terroir, that Bordeaux is so well known for, into each cuvee they produce. David and Helene’s wines are bottled without systematic filtration and only small amounts or no sulphur is added depending the vintage and the cuvee. Their naturally-made wines are vibrant, authentic and full of fruit. We personally love their texture and generosity of flavour. • Domaine Ludovic Bonnardot | Côte de Beaune | Mosaique Wines

Today, Domaine Bonnardot is farmed organically, Ludovic believes this approach is key to revealing the best nuances of each site across 18 appellations and 50 plots, along with the practice of natural vinification with no addition of sulfur or oenological products during vinification and low to no addition at bottling. Their vineyards are located in Hautes Côtes de Beaune, Santenay, Maranges, Pommard, Chassagne Montrachet and Puligny Montrachet. DOMAINE LUDOVIC BONNARDOT Côte de Beaune, Burgundy Organic There are not too many teenagers who would choose to spend their days in the vineyard, let alone experimenting on their grandfather’s grapes with natural winemaking. But then again, Ludovic Bonnardot was not your average teenager. Burgundian born and bred, Ludovic now guides the winemaking at the family estate - Domaine Bonnardot, taking over from his parents in 2006. The estate covers 15-hectares with two operations: one centered in Santenay, the wine-growing focuses on Côte de Beaune and Hautes-Côtes de Beaune appellations, while blackcurrants (cassis), asparagus and cereals are grown in Bonnencontre near the family home, just south of Dijon. The polyculture approach is a reflection of the long heritage of winemaking in the family, which dates back to 1470. Throughout the centuries, it was (and arguably still is) essential to have year-round agricultural output to spread the risk of crop failure and ensure a source of income for the family. Ludovic’s interest in natural winemaking at an early age was influenced by his mother Elisabeth, the Domaine’s winemaker while he was growing up. Elisabth graduated her enology studies in Beaune, studying alongside and eventually interning with Jules Chauvet - who is considered to be the father of natural winemaking. As a result, Elisabeth’s approach to winemaking was very much shaped by Chauvet, and she began to practice more natural approaches to her winemaking with her Burgundies. Today, Domaine Bonnardot is farmed organically, with the conversion starting when Ludovic returned to the family lands after graduating his winemaking education. Ludovic believes this approach is key to revealing the best nuances of each site across 18 appellations and 50 plots, along with the practice of natural vinification with no addition of sulfur or oenological products during vinification and low to no addition at bottling. The vineyards include Hautes Côtes de Beaune ‘En Chaignot’ and ‘Sur Evelle’, Bourgogne Côte d’Or ‘Clos Botaveaux’ Monopole, Bourgogne Aligoté, Santenay ’Saint Jean’, Santenay 1er cru ‘Clos Rousseau’, Maranges ‘Sur le Bois’, Pommard, Chassagne Montrachet and Puligny Montrachet 1er ‘La Garenne’, with vineyards average age of 45 years old. Before the beginning of Spring, natural fertiliser made from vegetal or animal matter is added to the soils to bring life. Then all the vines are plowed to encourage the decomposition of the organic matter and aeration of the earth. From here until vintage, Ludovic and his brother Emilien tend to the vines with debudding, relevage and trimming. Once vintage arrives, plots are harvested by hand at their best maturity and bought into the winery for hand sorting. Vinification of the white grapes includes slowly pressing the whole bunches, with the must then put into oak barrels for a 12-18 month fermentation. The fermentations are natural, with no addition of sulfur or addition of oenological product. After natural settling in the barrel and light filtration, the whites are ready for bottling. The red wines range between 30% and 100% whole bunch inclusion, with the berries macerated in oak tanks between 20 and 180 days. Again there is no addition of sulfur or product, and fermentation occurs with indigenous yeast. After the pressurage the wines are put into oak barrels for up to 12 - 18 months aging. The reds are not fined or filtered before bottling, with low or no addition of sulfur. This sometimes generates a light deposit however doesn’t alter the quality of the wine. Domaine Bonnardot wines are fresh, vibrant and pure, reflecting the considered approach to farming and vinification to ensure transparency of place. We love how they express each site with a very minimal extraction or oak influence. Most of all we appreciate the rare value for money these wines offer - something we don’t see much of in Burgundy these days. We’ll drink to that!
