- Domaine Marius Bielle | Mosaique Wines
Domaine Marius Bielle was founded in the 1940s by Damien’s grandfather, the domaine’s namesake, in Lalande-de-Pomerol. In this area, a grape maligned in other wine growing regions is seen as the king. Here, Merlot rules them all. DOMAINE MARIUS BIELLE Lalande-de-Pomerol, Bordeaux Organic The face of Bordeaux is changing. For a region so steeped in wine history, the pace is perhaps slower than other regions, however the Bordeaux our parents knew is quietly beginning to share the spotlight with a group of energised and talented new blood, including Damien Bielle of Domaine Marius Bielle. We met Damien around a table of laughter, pizzas and of course wine. This unique character was introduced to us by Olivier from Chateau Gombaude-Guillot, both young rising stars of Bordeaux who became fast friends. A passion for wine was an obvious shared connection, which has evolved into sharing a warehouse, however they also discovered a joint love of MMA fighting. Word is they’ve even fashioned a simple yet effective gym and a fighting ring in the warehouse! Domaine Marius Bielle was founded in the 1940s by Damien’s grandfather, the domaine’s namesake, in Lalande-de-Pomerol. In this area, a grape maligned in other wine growing regions is seen as the king. Here, Merlot rules them all. There are no blends, the wines are 100% Merlot, a ‘one terroir, one cepage’ approach championed by Burgundy. It is this approach that allows Damien to focus on making wines that highlight the nuances of this grape. Graduating as an agronomist engineer, he went onto oenology school in Bordeaux and then worked for some of the most prestigious producers in the world - Chateau Petrus (Pomerol) and Chateau Cheval Blanc (Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classe), before finally deciding to return to the family estate to create his own expression in 2020. The process starts on the famous Pomerol soils of sand and gravel, with 13 hectares of organically farmed vineyard (certified 2021). Weaved in between the oceans of surrounding vines, you’ll find the Domaine Marius Bielle ecosystem - breaking the monotony with trees, grass and flowers growing in the vineyard, freeing space to create orchards, vegetable gardens and allowing a few animals in the vines. When vintage rolls around, the grapes are handpicked and sorted, before maceration by infusion, and a slow natural fermentation with vinification occuring in stainless steel tanks. Like a painter in his workshop, it’s a moment of focus and presence - creating a sketch of the vintage. The ‘slow but steady’ ethos continues through to aging, using concrete tanks and amphoras to gently and softly raise his Merlot. Damien grew up in contact with les “vins d’avant”, an old school style of wine in the best of ways, those wines that took the time of aging in the cellar and then in bottles before being released. This has without doubt influenced his winemaking, insisting the wines reveal themselves in time, finding their complexity along the way and without the use of sulphur, filtering or fining. We are excited to be bringing these vibrant and contemporary wines to Australia. It’s Damien’s wish that these Bordeaux wines that are opened at tables filled with laughter and good friends, enjoyed with some quality meat on the barbecue, not to be intimidating and tasted in suits and silence. He wants his wines to bring conversation. Having tasted his line up and a range of spectacular back vintages, we’re sure they will. - Domaine Olivier Morin | Chitry Burgundy | Mosaique Wines
In 1992 Olivier was finally attracted back to the land of his ancestors, taking over the vineyard joining his brother Christian. Chitry is located 12 km south-west of the village of Chablis, in the North of Burgundy. Domaine Olivier Morin Chitry, Burgundy Organic non-certified The Domaine Morin has belonged to the Morin family since 1650, and even though the family was deeply rooted in winemaking, after studying wine in Beaune, Olivier pursued his own path far from the vines. He worked ten years as a radio announcer during the day and DJ at night. In 1992 Olivier was finally attracted back to the land of his ancestors, taking over the vineyard joining his brother Christian. Chitry is located 12 km south-west of the village of Chablis, in the North of Burgundy. Both Chitry and Chablis share similar Kimmeridgian limestone soils, as well as the grape variety with Chardonnay, so it's not a surprise that they make wine with a similar style! Domaine Morin is well and truly still a family run operation, with Olivier's wife Nelly joining the brothers in the pursuit of pure, character driven wine. The vineyard has now grown to 12 hectares, planted primarily with Chardonnay (50%), as well a Pinot Noir (25%) and Aligoté (25%). Most of these vineyards grow on picturesque rolling slopes, with old vines roots digging deep to express the minerality of Chitry's unique terroirs. Regarding viticulture, Morin respects a natural approach using natural compost as fertiliser, and a chemical/ herbicide free zone, allowing grass to grow between the vines. Soils are worked regularly, so the roots plunge deeply in the Kimmeridgian limestone soils. Regular cropping, detailed trellising, and systematically removing of buds are a few other manual works done at the vineyard, along with hand harvested of the grapes comes vintage time Additionally, all vinification is done with minimal sulphur added, using only natural yeasts and fermented in tank to preserve freshness and purity. Then the wines ages on lees in tank, and bottled with no filtration. Morin Chardonnay is energetic, precise with bright fruit and truly express the mineral soils found there. His Pinots show purity of fruit, with savoury notes - above all showing great character and value. In short, Olivier Morin produces spectacular wines for the money. - Domaine Raphael Chopin | Beaujolais | Mosaique Wines
Young Raphael Chopin is rapidly becoming one of the most promissing Beaujolais producer from his vineyard in Lantigné. In conversion to organic Raphael benefits from older vineyards including vines in Regnié and Morgon. Domaine Raphael Chopin Beaujolais Organic, in-conversion Beaujolais represents 18,000 hectares of vines, with this Beaujolais producer only farming 5 of them. Raphael Chopin, as humble as he is, shares an artistic talent just like his namesake. It was perhaps meant to be that he became a winemaker, auspiciously born on November 21st - the celebration of Beaujolais Nouveau. Add to this, winemaking was already in his blood, having a winemaker grandfather. With the encouragement of his mother and grandmother, Raphael proudly and painstakingly revived his grandfather's vineyard, restoring it to something rather special. After studying in France, Raphael dreamed of California, but vintage was at the same time as in Beaujolais, so Australia came naturally as the place to go for a vintage stint. He then returned to Beaujolais, bringing grandfather's estate back to life with the beautiful 2009 vintage. Chopin's original vineyard in Lantignié is a beautiful mix of 28 year old young vines, planted in 1989, as well as some rare older 110 year old vines planted in 1905, with 100% Gamay as the only red grape allowed in Beaujolais. It is from this La Savoye vineyard that the Beaujolais-Villages is made from. This pocket size vineyard produces just 11,000 bottles, with Lantigné’s vintners working on a project with the AOC board to become the 11th Beaujolais, Cru and the first Beaujolais Cru to be 100% certified. Extending the family holdings, Chopin now also own small holdings in Morgon and Régnié, creating wines to express these diverse terroirs. Raphael farm the vineyard organically, working towards certification. This means no use of chemicals, instead he uses essential oils, copper and limited levels of sulphur. He is tilling the soil, hand harvesting and sorting, essentially managing his small vineyard like he would a precious garden. The result is simply delicious, with purity of fruit as the trademark. LES ATHLETES DU VIN Loire Valley Sustainable and Organic farming “Les Athletes du Vin” is a collective of some of finest organic Loire Valley producers. Established in 2016, their objective is to make great value wines for wine lovers across the world, highlighting the appellations and grape varietals that contribute to the diversity and beauty of the Loire valley. Each of these producers have vineyards in all the corners of the Loire Valley region, they farm their vineyards and vinified each cuvee separately and collectively share the logistics and the sales of the wines. In true collective manner, they also share insights in to winemaking techniques, and seek feedback from each other on their wines. In fact, long lunches often accompany robust tastings - after all this is where their name comes from “Les Athletes du Vin”: the champion of the elbow rising (with moderation of course)! The ‘Athletes’ all share the same philosophy. Maximum care is taken with farming practices, which includes hand harvesting vines from 10 to 120 years old. In the winery, it’s all about minimal intervention, using natural yeast for fermentation, stainless steel, concrete and old oak along with minimum sulphur addition and light or no filtration depending of the cuvee. They aim to make delicious and real wine. What started as only 3 wines; a Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and a Pinot Noir is now a range of 15 wines including Touraine to Chinon, Grolleau and Pineau d’Aunis. Naturally, a group of dynamic winemakers were set on creating wine labels to reflect the spirit of their endeavours. And when the time came, only one name would do - Michel Tolmer. Who else than Tolmer, brilliant cartoon creator of ‘Mimi, Fifi et Glouglou’, and leading illustrator for the French “Natural Wine” movement. His style and imagination made him the perfect choice to capture each of the grapes and appellations of the Loire Valley. The collective of “Athletes” include: Gérald is based in Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil, where he makes AOC wines Cabernet Franc from Chinon and Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil. He also produces Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Pinot Noir from Touraine. Florent in the Saint-Pourçain area produces Chardonnay and Gamay, an area stylistically close to Beaujolais. Jean-Pierre in the Côte de Grand-Lieu in Muscadet area produces ‘Mumu-Chardonnay’, a blend of Melon de Bourgogne and Chardonnay. Antoine is based in Menetou-Salon and produces a Pinot Noir and a Sauvignon Blanc Sylvain makes the Coteaux du Layon Marius the Pouilly-Fumé Jean-François in Touraine makes the Pineau d’Aunis Nicolas the Saumur-Champigny Victor the Grolleau. Most of the single varietals wines are Vin de France or IGP Val de Loire, not that we care about what’s written on the bottle – it’s what’s inside the bottle that counts, and these wines are spectacular value! www.vinibegood.com Shop wines Quick View NV Les Athletes du Vin, Touraine sparkling Chenin Blanc Price $48.00 GST Included Quick View 2021 Les Athletes du Vin, Loire 'Chardonnay' white Out of stock Quick View 2022 Les Athletes du Vin, AOP Saumur Champigny 'Cabernet franc' Price $42.00 GST Included Quick View 2023 Les Athletes du Vin, Vin de France 'Chenin Blanc' Out of stock Load More
- Domaine Vincent Gaudry | Sancerre | Mosaique Wines
Vincent Gaudry lives in the tiny vintners' hamlet of Le Petit Chambre in Sury en Vaux, 3 kilometres from Sancerre. Sury en Vaux means “the smiling valley”, and it makes much sense when you reach this place. Vincent took over the vineyard from his family in 1993, introducing organic and biodynamic. Domaine Vincent Gaudry Sancerre, Loire Valley Biodynamic certified Vincent Gaudry lives in the tiny vintners' hamlet of Le Petit Chambre in Sury en Vaux, 3 kilometres from Sancerre. Sury en Vaux means “the smiling valley”, and it makes much sense when you reach this place. Vincent took over the vineyard from his family in 1993, introducing the start organic and biodynamic farming. In 2002, the vineyard was certified organic, before full biodynamic Demeter certification in 2004. Organic and Biodynamic were essential for two reasons: first for his health and then to respect his terroirs. As a true minimalist Vincent’s guiding principle is “Trust in Nature”. He makes wine in tune with the power of the elements, with a feeling of being profoundly connected to the land. Inspired by local vignerons of the past from the village, insiders considering Gaudry's wines to be the most authentic expression of Sancerre. Although biodynamics is one of his pillars, Vincent continues to push boundaries by mixing pragmatism and intuition to pioneer new methods, which has earned him a following. The 9 hectare vineyard is composed of limestone and marl, 90% planted with Sauvignon Blanc and 10% with Pinot Noir. The vineyard averages vines of 40 years of age, planted by massal selection from a plot of 90 year old vines of old Sauvignon varieties. It gives berries of different size and maturity, which Vincent believes brings complexity in his wines. The grapes are all hand harvested in small baskets. In the winery, Vincent remains a traditionalist, shying away from trends he looks for balance between both varietal and terroir. The wines are fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, with native yeasts to allow the terroir and varietal expression to shine through. The wines are then aged on lees and are bottled unfined and unfiltered with the bottling date according to the lunar calendar. The result is precisely delineated wines with stony minerality, concentration, texture, weight, complexity and lengthy vibrant finish. Le Tournebride Sancerre This 30 years old vineyard is representative of the 3 Terroirs of Sancerre: the stony, rubble-like Kimmeridgian limestone (Caillottes) brings the aromatics, the clay-limestone or marl (Terres Blanches) brings the structure in the mouth and the flint (Silex) the length. The wines are vinified with natural yeast in stainless steel and oak. Each batch moves from one vessel to the other, before final blending and ageing on fine lees. The result is a wine with spice, texture and impressive length, with a mineral finish. Constellation du Scorpion Sancerre This wine is dedicated to the biodynamic memories of the elements and named for the scorpion sign, which is sharp like the Silex’s terroir where the vine are planted. The wine is vinified in oak, with time varying each year based on vintage conditions. Scorpion is best enjoyed after a few moments of air - after which it opens to a textured palate of almond, lime-flower and grapefruit. The mineral attack persists, with flint and earth flavours, grilled almond, dried pear, blood orange and apricot. The finish is saline, elegant, clean and long, with lingering white fruits. Today he has 16 hectares of vines in his care, spreading across the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. Domaine Nudant Ladoix-Serigny, Burgundy Sustainable Established in the 15th century, Domaine Nudant is located in Ladoix-Serigny. Fast forward to 2003, when Guillaume Nudant spearheaded a new generation making his debut for the Domaine. Today he has 16 hectares of vines in his care, spreading across the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits including prestigious terroir such as Grand Crus Corton-Charlemagne, Corton-Bressandes, Echezeaux, along with several Premiers Cru on the hill of Corton; Aloxe Corton “Les Valozières”, “La Coutière” or the monopole “Clos de la Boulotte”. In Ladoix near the cellar, they produce Ladoix village, Ladoix 1er cru “Les Gréchons”, “Les Buis”, “La Corvée”. Finally they also farm vineyards in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne Romanée, Volnay 1er cru “Les Santenots”, Puligny-Montrachet with the 1er cru “Les Folatières”, as well as a beautiful Meursault village. Phew! Young Guillaume has carved out his niche, following winemaking and viticultural practices to shine a light on the incredible terroir he is now the custodian of. This includes grating selection, yield control, regular ploughing of the vines, organic composting, copper treatments and sustainable farming without the use of herbicides. Discovering these wines is indeed a journey through Burgundy. They are impressive, honest expressions of place that continue to evolve in the bottle, whilst being approachable and moreish on release. Ladoix 1er Cru “Les Buis” Delicious Ladoix, bright with high precision and vibrancy. Made from a small 0.98 hectare, with 40 year old vineyard. This wine has a delicate nose with aromas of red fruits such as blackcurrants and cherries. Elegant aromatics, with a hint of earthiness. Limited production of approx. 5 500 bottles every year. With careful cellaring, enjoy up to 10 years old. Vosne Romanee From 0.94 hectares, located in the small village of Vosne-Romanée, with old vines that are more than 50 years. Made of low yield (37 hectoliters), this Pinot expresses itself beautifully with an intense colour and a nose made up of dark berries such as blackberries and blueberries. Powerful and still full of finesse, you will also get a touch of spice thanks to 20% new oak on the finish. Decant for an hour in its youth before enjoying, alternatively it will develop for 15 years. Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots (vine leased) Les Santenots vineyard is located in the southern part of Volnay, near the village of Meursault. The particular structure of the soil (limestone, gravel and marl) makes Les Santenots a very aromatic wine, full of blackberries, raspberries and subtle notes of oak. It’s an elegant wine, delicately complex and concentrated at the same time. Meursault (vine leased) Citrusy, with subtle notes of spice and vanilla. On the palate, it shows a deep sense of place through purity, minerality and a finer texture if compared to most super creamy Meursault. Impressive length and finish. - Thierry Navarre | Mosaique Wines
Thierry Navarre is a bit of an icon in his region of Languedoc. He is widely regarded as one of the most respected natural winemakers in the area, best known for continuing his family’s dedication to resurrecting lost and ancient grape varietals. DOMAINE Thierry Navarre Saint-Chinian, Languedoc Organic Two Star La Revue de Vin de France: “Amongst the elite of the area.” New York Times: "To Find the Best of Languedoc, Follow the Producer" 2019 Jancis Robinson: "Languedoc for terroir-driven bargains" 2004 The story of how Thierry Navarre came to be part of our Mosaique Wines offering is a long one, literally, but we’re so glad we persisted and can bring these wonderful wines to Australia. Thierry Navarre is a producer we have had in our mind for some years. We would check in every year to see if we might get a response but given he spends so much time in the vineyard, and not so much time in front of the phone or computer, it proved a difficult task. Finally, we saw a chance in March 2023 - Thierry would be at the La Dive a Bouteille Wine Fair, and so would Thomas on a flying trip to France. The trip was almost accounted for by the minute, and as the morning of the wine fair ticked by, Thierry was nowhere to be seen and Thomas needed to leave to go to another wine fair. Of course, just as Thomas was leaving, Thierry arrives already in deep conversation with someone else. Long story short, Thomas decides to be late (not a big drama for the French), and stay until he can finally meet Thierry - an encounter years in the making and instantly worth the wait. Thierry Navarre is a bit of an icon in his region of Languedoc. He is widely regarded as one of the most respected natural winemakers in the area, and his wines are celebrated for their depth, complexity, and terroir-driven flavours. Without question, Navarre is best known for continuing his family’s dedication to promoting diversity of grape varietals in the region, resurrecting lost and ancient grape varietals - most of which are lower in alcohol. Taking over from over the domaine's vineyards in 1988, Navarre is a man who lives in his vines - a patch of 15ha based in and around the picturesque village of Roquebrun (which incidentally is set to become a grand cru of Saint-Chinian). His vineyards are farmed organically and filled with a role call of both popular and yet to be discovered varieties including Œillades, Ribeyrenc, Syrah, Cinsault, Grenache noir, Carignan, Romorantin, Clairette, Grenache gris, Marsanne, Terret and Muscat à petit grains blanc. These vines have a southwest exposure, and combined with soils composed of loose brown schist, generally produce lighter, mineral driven, delicate, more elegant styles compared to the wines from further south in Saint-Chinian. His lower alcohol (11%) and brighter ‘Le Vin d’Oeillades’ (Cinsault’s cousin) and ‘Le Ribeyrenc’ are French sommelier favourites and considered a ‘best kept secret’. The grapes are hand harvested, with some fully or partially destemmed. Following a natural fermentation in cement tanks, some of the cuvees are vinified traditionally, while others are vinified with carbonic maceration. Ageing occurs in a mix of tanks, old 228 litre and 500 litre barrels and foudre for 12 months. The resulting wines are unfined, yet they are filtered and have low sulphur. Navarre’s intuition for winemaking and passion for history translate into wines sought out by true wine lovers, a discovery not to be missed that we couldn’t be more excited to share! - Domaine Garon | Cote-Rotie | Mosaique Wines
Kevin and Fabien Garon farmed organically their vineyards and produce a range of spectacular Cotes du Rhone, IGP Collines Rhodaniennes Syrah, Cote Rotie, Saint Joseph as well as Condrieu and IGP Viognier. Domaine garon Cote-Rotie, Cotes du Rhone Organic non-certified We can all agree, Cote-Rotie in northern Rhone is one of, if not the spiritual home of Syrah. The Garon family certainly thinks so, having based themselves here, in Ampuis, since the 15th century. The family patriach Jean Garon was born here in 1475, battling hard times and growing grapes for a merchant (Guigal), along with farming fruit. Fast forward a few centuries to 1982, when Jean François and Carmen Garon replanted vines in the abandoned slopes of Cote-Rotie. "It wasn't bad for the vineyards to rest a hundred years between plantings" according to, Jean-Francois! In 2003, Jean-Francois' sons Kevin and Fabien joined the estate, taking the wines to yet another level. Kevin said “every year, the wine is different. A vintage is often full of memories, a bottle always captures a little bit of the story. In the Cote Rotie more than anywhere we can say that the wine is made in the vineyard, in the middle of the steep and dangerous terraces.” With about 8.3 hectares, the Garons farm the land organically and even use the horse. Weeding, like most of the vineyard work, is done by hand. This care taken in the vineyard is reflected in wines of great expression and personality. There is no over extraction, with gentle and long vinification bringing finesse. They are seeking a more Burgundian style of Côte-Rôtie. Cotes du Rhone “La Part des Vivants” A name which means the wine left for us to drink after the angel share. The grapes come from Ampuis area, declassified Cru Cairanne and also Rasteau fruits. Mostly de-stemmed, traditional vinification. 70% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 10% Carignan. Aged in very old barrels of 228 litres. Low sulphur. Black fruits, concentrated wild berries, spices, dark chocolate and a slight earthiness. Beautiful acidity and pure with a saline finish. “Les Grandes Parcelles” IGP Collines Rhodaniennes 100% Syrah, affectionately referred to as ababy Cote Rotie, sometimes including an amount of declassified fruit. Hand harvested, followed by traditional vinification. Elegant, intense with dark cherry, small berries, fine tannins, long balanced finish. La Sybarine A blend of 25 year old Syrah from plots on decomposed granite from the “Cote Rotie Blond area” (Lieu dit Goutay and Mollard). Handpicked, temperature controlled ferment ans roughly 80% destemmed. Daily punching down and pumping over during alcoholic fermentation, followed by 15 days maceration and 14 months in old French oak barrels. Aromas of blackberry and strawberry with violet, citrus notes as well as grilled bacon. Vibrant fruit on the palate, with rich and round with lush red fruits and blood orange notes lifted by good acidity. Approachable power, the finish is long with deep red fruit ending with a dark earthy minerality. Drink young and over the next ten years. The Garon also farm: Les Triotes (schist blond area), Les Rochins (Brune area next to La Landonne), Lancement and delicious white IGP Viognier and impressive Condrieu. "As I wrote last year, the running of Domaine Garon has passed largely to sons Kévin and Fabien Garon, who came on board at the domaine starting in 2003. While quality was reliable in the 2000s, since 2010, everything appears to have been on a steady upward trajectory, with the 2015 being the finest wines I've tasted from the estate, and magical wines produced in both 2017 and 2018. Lovers of pure, classical Côte Rôtie need to get on this estate's bandwagon ASAP!" - Jeb Dunnuck .
