- Domaine Ogereau | Anjou & Savennière | Mosaique Wines
Nestled in the heart of Anjou Noir, in the village of Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay, along the serene banks of the Layon River, lies Domaine Ogereau - a domaine that has been quietly crafting magnificent expressions of terroir-driven Chenin Blanc for over a century with vineyards across Anjou, Coteaux du Layon, Quart de Chaume Grand Cru, and Savennieres now run by Emmanuel Ogereau. DOMAINE OGEREAU Anjou Noir, Savennieres, Layon, Quarts de Chaume Organic & Biodynamic BETTANE ET DESSEAUVE: Producer of the year 2020 “At the top of his game, Emmanuel Ogereau established himself as a great of the Loire Valley signature with his cuvees of high esteem. We are stunned by the definition and precision of the wines. Finesse, elegance, everything is in line. A staple." REVUE DES VINS DE FRANCE: 1* Star “The consistency and precision of the wines year after year guided us to give the domaine its first start. Vincent Ogereau and his son Emmanuel, have a firm conviction of their vision for great Chenins of terroir, dry or sweet. Le Clos Le Grand Beaupréau (on Aeolian sands at the top of the hill d’Épiré) and La Saponaire are amongst some of the most ambitious whites of the Savennières appellation. Care and precision, these are two words that come often in the description of these wines.” MANUEL PEYRONDET (MOF and France Best Sommelier 2008) “Without any doubt, Emmanuel Ogereau is on his way to write a magnificent chapter in the Anjou Noir and deserve the attention of all wine lovers!” Nestled in the heart of Anjou Noir, in the village of Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay, along the serene banks of the Layon River, lies Domaine Ogereau - a domaine that has been quietly crafting magnificent expressions of terroir-driven wines for over a century. Born in the late 1890s, the journey of this family-owned domaine has been one of gradual evolution, with a deep appreciation for the land at the heart of it all. Beginning with vine plantings after the devastating of phylloxera, the masterful mosaic of vineyards now encompasses diverse terroirs across Anjou, Coteaux du Layon, Quart de Chaume Grand Cru, and Savennieres - the culmination of an enduring legacy of multi-generational winemakers now overseen by Emmanuel Ogereau. Born in 1989, all the clichés of life on the family vineyard ring true for Emmanuel. His early years were steeped in the rich traditions of winemaking, with plenty of time spent (willingly) in the family cellars instilling a profound love, energy and enthusiasm for the craft which endures. Following his formal education, Emmanuel pursued winemaking and viticulture studies in Angers, honing his skills and knowledge before venturing to the far corners of the earth, interning at Carrick, a biodynamic vineyard in Central Otago. Upon meeting Emmanuel, his passion for all things wine is evident. He is proud of his family and their achievements (particularly his father, Vincent who is renowned as one of Anjou's classic winemakers), but also champions other producers in the region who are as progressive and curious. Emmanuel’s knowledge of the region is intimate, and it shows in his approach to winemaking. Understanding the array and complexity of soil types (Dark Schist, Aeolian Sand, Sandstone Vein, Puddingstone and Carboniferous Coal, Spilite, Sandstone Schists, and Altered Schists) is crucial to be able to farm the plantings of Chenin Blanc, Grolleau, Pineau d'Aunis, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon organically (certified Ecocert). This commitment and respect for the land is foremost, with an ongoing conversion to biodynamic viticulture (Biodyvin) underway for his 23 hectares. Without doubt, the variety Domaine Ogereau can hang its hat on is the region hero - Chenin Blanc. In the realm of Chenin, Emmanuel is unyielding in his dedication to showcasing the remarkable diversity of terroirs and treatments. His contribution to the family domaine has been his meticulous approach to crafting these wines, a dedication to the 'No Botrytis' style setting a new standard for how pure dry Chenin Blanc can be. The grapes are harvested before the onset of botrytis, ensuring that only unaffected berries make it into the final wines. For the dry whites, any botrytised grapes are painstakingly removed. The harvest is conducted in two sweeps, focusing on the golden moment when the grapes start to turn yellow. In the cellar, Emmanuel uses sulphur judiciously, avoiding overuse, and occasionally explores trials with zero added sulphur. His exacting standards extend to the selection of juice, with whole clusters gently pressed without crushing. Pressing is slow and the first twenty litres of free-run juice are consistently discarded in order to avoid undesired herbaceous notes and bitterness. Natural fermentation begins in stainless steel tanks, then the wines are transferred to their ageing vessels: cement tanks lined with sandstone tiles, 400 and 500-liter barrels or Stockinger foudre (no new oak). The wines ferment until fully dry for the sec. They are usually lightly filtered. Important note, sometimes 30% of his Chenins undergo partial malolactic fermentation, a ‘winemaker’s choice’ to enhance the character of his wines. Emmanuel Ogereau's wines are the embodiment of the finest terroir-driven expressions, marked by precision, elegance, and a connection to the land. As Emmanuel continues to refine his craft and innovate, the wines of Domaine Ogereau are just getting better and better. https://domaineogereau.com/en/ Shop wines Quick View 2021 Domaine Ogereau Anjou 'Vent de Spilite' white Price $91.00 GST Included Quick View 2023 Domaine Ogereau VDF 'L'Enjouée' red Price $53.00 GST Included Quick View 2021 Domaine Ogereau Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru 'La Martinière' 50cl sweet Price $135.00 GST Included Quick View 2022 Domaine Ogereau Coteaux du Layou 'Saint Lambert' sweet Price $81.00 GST Included Load More
- Domaine de Montbourgeau | Jura | Mosaique Wines
The vineyard was planted in 1920, by Nicole Deriaux's grandfather in l'Etoile, and has produced traditional Jura wines since. The vineyard is organically farmed, and the vinification is very traditional, respecting the ancient practices of this region. Domaine de Montbourgeau L'Etoile, Jura Organic, in-conversion The Domaine de Montbourgeau is situated in the southwestern area of the Jura ,more precisely in the village of L’Etoile - meaning 'star'. depending on who you ask, the name comes from either the fact that five hills are surrounding the village make the shape of a star or, because of the many fossils of ancient starfish that you can find in the soils of this appellation. Either way, it is one of the smallest in the Jura with only 52 hectares. The vineyard was planted in 1920, by Nicole Deriaux's grandfather, and has produced traditional Jura wines since. In 1956 Nicole’s father, Jean Gros, became the head of the family and taking his turn to develop the vineyard and the cellar. Then some thirty years later in 1986, it was finally time for Nicole to take part in the operation of the Domaine. Continuing the family tradition, she is now helped by her son Cesar. They Deriaux's are hard-working people, with their efforts reflected in bottle. The wines are precise, straightforward, and with superb intensity. The ten hectares of vines are composed primarily of Chardonnay and Savagnin, as well as some reds with a small planting of Trousseau and Poulsard. The vineyard is organically farmed, and the vinification is very traditional, respecting the ancient practices of this region. Nicole Deriaux through her natural approach to viticulture and winemaking aims to retain and fully express the purity of l'Etoile terroir. When harvest time comes, the grapes are pick by hands and then vinified in the cave underneath Deriaux's home. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks using strictly indigenous yeasts. Then all the wines are racked into a mix of old foudres, demi-muids and smaller barrels. The whites are matured in barrel; they are never racked; they are not topped off. The small quantity of wines produced is then bottled, with no fining and a light filtration. The L'Etoile signature style, crafted by talented Nicole Deriaux, are wines of unique purity and elegance that we are proud to import. "2012 Cuvee Speciale Chardonnay: One of those Jura producers that seems to get overlooked for the Instagrammable ones, and by virtue of that, leaves us, the righteous, opportunity to access the wines! Hurrah! Meanwhile, sustainable farming is the ticket here, as is 20 to 90 year old vines. It is chardonnay that matures for four years, on lees, under a yeast flor. And so fresh out of these bottles. Amazing." 96 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front . "2014 L’Etoile Chardonnay: from an old school-good school producer out of Jura. Often unsung, but the proof is in bottle, definitively. Rocketing up my ‘interest’ rankings. Beautiful white wines." 94 points Mike Bennie, The Wine Front . "2018 Poulsard: Organic producer that sits under the radar in Jura, but is firmly on mine now. It took me a while to get to these wines, but when I did they suddenly became very important in my Jura matrix... When poulsard is on, it is world beating. Here’s one.” 95 points Mike Bennie, The Wine Front . - Pastis Garagai | Aix-en-Provence | Mosaique Wines
Pastis Garagai, is the work of young Maixent Dubois. Growing up among the family vineyard in Provence might have steered him towards the family business; however he has chosen to take the spirit of terroir and apply it to pastis. The story began with 300 bottles for the 2019 vintage, as a side hustle while Maixent was working part time at the vineyard. Today, the average yearly production is still tiny, with just 5,000 bottles per year, to ensure each vintage produced retains a focus on quality. Distillerie GARAGAÏ Aix-en-Provence Organic Sometimes we find a wine, and other times a wine finds us. Then there is the rare occasion when it’s not wine at all, rather a drink to remind us of hot summer afternoons, village parties and Le Tour. On a recent trip back to France, I took an afternoon out to travel to a nearby town to watch a stage of Le Tour de France pass by. It was the peak of the summer heat wave, and rather than stand in the sun waiting for cyclists, I nabbed a shady outdoor spot at the most local of bars where the pastis was cheaper than bottled water. By the end of that tall, refreshing glass it was clear our next producer would be the best expression of this rustic, aniseed-y spirit I could find. Pastis Garagai, meaning ‘gulf’ or ‘hole’ in local Provencal dialect, is the work of young Maixent Dubois. Pastis Garagai is distilled from a base of star anise and liquorice from Provence plus about twenty other botanicals and plants, many of which are foraged from the Sainte-Victoire mountain or grown organically on the vineyard. These include fennel flower, lemon basil, liquorice basil, Marseille basil, peppermint, tarragon, sage, absinthe, verbena, thyme, rosemary and lemon thyme. By sourcing locally, Maixent can limit the environmental impact of transportation, control picking so he takes only what is required and importantly provides the freshest possible ingredients for his pastis. The depth of flavour added by fresh botanicals means the amount of added sugar is three to four times lower than commercial brands. The distillery itself is based in Aix-En-Provence, and consists of three small alembic pot stills - one 400L, one 300L and one 100L. After the botanicals are harvested from April to October, they undergo a week-long maceration one by one with a neutral grape alcohol. The fresh plants haven’t been dried beforehand, so they keep their natural vibrancy and deepness of flavor. After this comes the crucial blending process, taking place in November, and finally bottling with light filtration and no sulfur added. The result is a truly refreshing, artisanal expression of a traditional southern France aperitif. We love Maixent’s approach to making pastis from a single origin, a little bit like a wine domaine producing grapes only from one location. To make a bold statement, we think it’s the best pastis out there. Don’t take our word for it though - pour yourself a dash, mix with chilled water and ice then dive in. Cidrerie du Leguer is based in Brittany, six hours drive directly west of Paris – so far west, the next step is the Atlantic Ocean. Here Cedric Le Bloas and his team craft artisanal ciders in very cool (ice cold) climate, farming a small 6 hectares of certified organic apple and pear trees. CIDRERIE DU LEGUER Britany Organic certified Who says great French ciders must come from Normandy?! Not us! A Brittany native, Cedric completed his agriculture studies and travelled around the country and beyond, before stumbling upon what would become the Ciderie du Leguer. After restoring the orchard, 2016 saw the first vintage. Since then it’s been a labour of love and hard work – as Cedric and the team take it up on themselves meticulously maintain the farm following organic principles, lovingly tending to trees aged from between two and thirty years old. The trees themselves house a wide range of indigenous varieties, including: Marie Ménard, Jeanne Renard (Bitter varieties) Fréquin Rouge, Belle fille de la Manche Kermerrien, Frijelach’, Peau de Chien (Bitter-sweet) Bedan, Dous Moën, Douce Coët Lignée (Sweet) and finally Judor, Locart Vert, Rouget de Dol, Petit Jaune (Sharp). Each cuvee is made according to Cedric’s taste, however the same process is followed time and again. The trees are hand harvested three times between October and December, before further ripening in crates before pressing up to 4 weeks later. The ciders go through two ferments – the first lasting 5 months before bottling, followed by a 3 month fermentation in bottle. The ciders are bottled with no sulphur, just pure juice, naturally sparkling and spontaneous, no collage, only racking and filtering when required. All ciders are brut or extra brut. As for the end result? These are exceptional ciders with a vinous quality, brimming with character, complex and acid driven with perfectly balanced fruit and tannins. Cidre Granit Considered as a brut cider, Cidre Granit is a ‘cuvee parcelaire’, or a ‘single orchard’. The top of the tree cuvee, so to speak. Round, generous, fruity, subtle tannins. Not bitter. Apple blending: 15% bitter, 50% bitter-sweet, 20% sweet, 15% sharp. BrutBrut An extra-brut cider, this expression is fruity, slightly mineral, with good length and liveliness on the palate. Apple blending: 5% bitter, 50% bitter-sweet, 25% sweet, 20% sharp. Premium A brut cider, and another ‘Cuvée parcelaire’ or ‘single orchard’ expression. The wines of Clos de Gamot are the humble benchmark of Malbec from this area, with the Jouffreau family passing winemaking traditions from father to son since 1610. The wines of Clos de Gamot are the humble benchmark of Malbec from this area, with the Jouffreau family passing winemaking traditions from father to son since 1610. There have been more than a few bumps along the way, yet the Jouffreau's had remained true to their vines, never abandoning their traditional grapes for trends and continuing to bottle wines when others in the region had defaulted. The philosophy of the Jouffreau family is simple: be good farmers. give things time, observe nature, be respectful. This approach has seen vines ageing back to 1885 still producing intense, great fruit. The vineyard is located on the second and third of the Lot river's terraces, composed of pebbles, gravel, and quartz mixed with alluvium of the Lot. With no use of herbicide, the workload on the vineyard is enormous. From a winemaking perspective, grapes are sorted when they join the cellar. Each plot is vinified separately, with gentle pumping over to keep a harmonious structure. Wine is aged for 18 to 24 months in old oak pungent with some 40 years old foudre (70hl and 100hl). Jean Jouffreau’s daughters and his son-in-law Yves Hermann have continued to lovingly care for the family vines, with Yves' son now joining the legacy. The tradition continues, with the focus on bottle maturation remaining. “A wine, like a person,” says Yves, “should have a personal story to tell over time.” With the range of vintages the estate offers, it is possible for consumers to affordably capture history in a glass. We’ll drink to that! Clos de Gamot is vibrant. Violet notes lead, with pure and fresh dark fruits, and approachable crunchy tannins. Skillful use of oak rounds out the package, with a long, persistent finish. Produced only for outstanding vintage, the Cuvee des Vignes Centenaires is made from +100 years old vines. After careful decanting, notes of plum abound, with generous concentrated ripe black fruits and subtle leather aromas. A wine to induce goosebumps on first sip. Old vintages from Gamot are bucket list wines. Older vintages such as 1978, 1988, 1990 are outstanding. The ability of Clos de Gamot wines to age and transform over time is exceptional. - Chateau de Villeneuve | Saumur Champigny | Mosaique Wines
Located in Souzay Champigny Chateau de Villeneuve is composed of 22ha of Cabernet Franc, along with 5ha Chenin Blanc, planted at 5,500 vines per hectare on limestone soils, with an average vine age of 40 years. The vineyard has been certified organic since 2009, however Chevallier has been farming according to organic principles since 1993. It must also be mentioned, the nostalgic Chevallier also has a few small parcels of gorgeous 80-year-old vines from his hometown of Dampierre-sur-Loire. CHATEAU DE VILLENEUVE Saumur-Champigny Organic certified Why purchase just any old vineyard when you can snap up one with an 18th century chateau, complete with sweeping views of the Loire?! This may or may not have been the train of thought of Jean-Pierre Chevallier’s parents when they purchased Chateau de Villeneuve in1969, but in any case we consider it a good buy. The chateau had long been one in the hands of winemakers, with records showing wines produced on the site since 1577. Fittingly (and perhaps necessarily) a maze of old cellars, still in operation, can be found hidden underneath, and more recently in 2016 a modern winery was added to ensure the wines are made in the best of conditions. The estate itself is composed of 22ha of Cabernet Franc, along with 5ha Chenin Blanc, planted at 5,500 vines per hectare on limestone soils, with an average vine age of 40 years. The vineyard has been certified organic since 2009, however Chevallier has been farming according to organic principles since 1993. It must also be mentioned, the nostalgic Chevallier also has a few small parcels of gorgeous 80-year-old vines from his hometown of Dampierre-sur-Loire. In the vineyard, the utmost care is taken at each stage of the vine’s lifecycle. Chevallier prides himself on not taking ‘short cuts’, refusing to use chemical fertilizers or pesticides and working his vines and emphasizes that "in organic culture, we obtain more stable wines even at 13 ° and ph are lower. The roots really plunge into the ground.” Come vintage time, all grapes are hand harvested and carried in small crates to reduce any unnecessary damage. This is followed by hand sorting on the sorting table, before they are gently delivered, with the help of gravity, to underground vats, thus avoiding the harshness of the pumps. Aging takes place in a mix of foudre, 500L barrels, concrete and stainless steel tanks depending on the nature of the cuvee. Importantly, there is minimal sulfur used in the winery, and Chavallier does not add yeast or chaptalise. Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc lovers should find their happiness with Chateau de Villeneuve wines. Quality is the number one aim for Chevallier, resulting in balanced, mouth-watering cuvees, reflective of the land in which they are grown and the expertise of a family with five generations of local knowledge. Happily, the sixth generation are already on the job, with Jean-Pierre’s two daughters set to continue the family tradition - we can’t wait to taste their legacy! - Domaine Raphael Chopin | Beaujolais | Mosaique Wines
Young Raphael Chopin is rapidly becoming one of the most promissing Beaujolais producer from his vineyard in Lantigné. In conversion to organic Raphael benefits from older vineyards including vines in Regnié and Morgon. Domaine Raphael Chopin Beaujolais Organic, in-conversion Beaujolais represents 18,000 hectares of vines, with this Beaujolais producer only farming 5 of them. Raphael Chopin, as humble as he is, shares an artistic talent just like his namesake. It was perhaps meant to be that he became a winemaker, auspiciously born on November 21st - the celebration of Beaujolais Nouveau. Add to this, winemaking was already in his blood, having a winemaker grandfather. With the encouragement of his mother and grandmother, Raphael proudly and painstakingly revived his grandfather's vineyard, restoring it to something rather special. After studying in France, Raphael dreamed of California, but vintage was at the same time as in Beaujolais, so Australia came naturally as the place to go for a vintage stint. He then returned to Beaujolais, bringing grandfather's estate back to life with the beautiful 2009 vintage. Chopin's original vineyard in Lantignié is a beautiful mix of 28 year old young vines, planted in 1989, as well as some rare older 110 year old vines planted in 1905, with 100% Gamay as the only red grape allowed in Beaujolais. It is from this La Savoye vineyard that the Beaujolais-Villages is made from. This pocket size vineyard produces just 11,000 bottles, with Lantigné’s vintners working on a project with the AOC board to become the 11th Beaujolais, Cru and the first Beaujolais Cru to be 100% certified. Extending the family holdings, Chopin now also own small holdings in Morgon and Régnié, creating wines to express these diverse terroirs. Raphael farm the vineyard organically, working towards certification. This means no use of chemicals, instead he uses essential oils, copper and limited levels of sulphur. He is tilling the soil, hand harvesting and sorting, essentially managing his small vineyard like he would a precious garden. The result is simply delicious, with purity of fruit as the trademark. Located just 20 minutes from Cahors, the estate has been run by generations of Gisbert vignerons since 1778, focused on making wine to be shared amongst good company (and preferably over long lunches). The vineyard is nestled between fields of sunflowers and fruit trees, with vines wrapping around the church of Saint Etienne- its bell tower keeping watch over the grapes. Making the best wine possible from sustainable vinification methods is primary for our family, sticking to tried and tested processes from generations past, in order to create balanced and elegant Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Côt blends, as well as delicious Cabernet Franc and Rosé. Camille and son Roger knew they were on the right track as the land was cultivated for vines, finding multiple reminders of the Roman ambitions to also make wine on the site. The remnants of amphora, and of course the mosaics, continue to serve as a reminder of simple, yet effective, winemaking. The Coteaux du Quercy AOC is one of France's smallest wine region with only 400 hectares and less than 20 growers. After Phylloxera, Quercy, once 50 000 hectares, was almost destroyed. Roger Gisbert and his brave mates started their appellation from scratch. With high draining slopes of white clay and limestone soils, Cabernet Franc was chosen to blend with the Merlot, and of course the Côt (Malbec). Today, Benoit and Mathieu farm the vineyard sustainably, helped by the geographic situation of parcels on a protected south-east facing amphitheatre. Pruning is done with the moon like generation past, a grassy cover crop is left in every second row to reduce vigour and encourage competition, allowing lower yield. Rosé sec This rosé is dry, revealing notes of stone fruit, raspberry, and strawberry with a lovely texture. Rouge tradition This red blend is showing red fruits as well as darker forest berries and liquorice with generous ripe fruit. Red grapes: Cabernet franc, Côt (Malbec), Merlot, Gamay, Jurançon Noir White grapes: Mauzac, Chardonnay, Viognier chaisaintetienne.fr Shop wines Quick View 2016 Chai Saint Etienne, AOC Quercy 'Les Trois Pierre' red Out of stock Quick View 2022 Chai Saint Etienne, AOC Coteaux du Quercy Rosé Out of stock Quick View 2019 Chai Saint Etienne, Vin de Pays du Lot 'Les verres l'air' Out of stock Quick View 2022 Chai Saint Etienne, AOC Quercy 'Rouge Tradition' Cabernet franc blend Price $38.00 GST Included
- Domaine des Trouilleres | Auvergne | Mosaique Wines
Les Athletes du Vin is a collective of some of finest organic Loire Valley producers. Established in 2016, their objective is to make great value wines for wine lovers across the world, highlighting the appellations and grape varietals that contribute to the diversity and beauty of the Loire valley. DOMAINE DES TROUILLERES Auvergne Organic certified Volcanic soils, it turns out, are destined to follow Mikael Hyvert wherever he goes. Perhaps they have a natural pull that keeps Hyvert coming back. Either way, from the volcanoes of Tahiti that filled his youth, to the dormant rises of Auvergne, there’s no questioning Hyvert’s passion for this landscape. Growing up in Tahiti with a French father, and a family friend in the wine import trade, it was only a matter of time before Mikael would come to discover the pleasures of wine. When looking for a career path after graduating high school, it would only take a gentle nudge to point him in the direction of Bordeaux, and enrolling in Blanquefort viticulture school. And from here, the rest, as they say, is history. The natural wine bug bit hard during this time, as Mikael became more and more focused on these techniques. A friendship forged in Bordeaux with a Loire local then resulted in Mikael seeking out legends from the region, including Olivier Lemasson, Herve Villemade and Thierry Puzelat to work with and learn from. After an eventful vintage experience in Chile, Hyvert made his way back to the fertile learning grounds of the Loire and Bordeaux before an opportunity to make his own wine presented itself. Plans were already brewing to move to Languedoc with his archaeologist girlfriend, Camille, however the right fit was proving hard to find. Fate intervened when Camille was offered a 12 month contract in the Auvergne. The volcanic landscape reminded Mikael of his childhood in Tahiti and it wasn’t long before the winemaking potential of the region became apparent. While finding his feet in Auvergne with different domaines, fate again intervened through a chance meeting with winemaker Jean-Pierre Pradier, founder of the AOC Cotes d’Auvergne and owner of Domaine des Trouilleres. The connection between the two was immediate, with shared views on organic farming facilitating a friendship that would later lead to Pradier finding his successor in Mikael in 2016. The region is technically part of the Loire, where Mikael had already spent much time, and while it’s not as well known as other areas of the Loire, Auvergne has a long, storied history of resistance spirit. In fact, it used to be one of the biggest wine regions in France, with 45,000ha under vine before a combination of Phylloxera and population movement decimated the region. Today, Auvergne is enjoying a renaissance with young, dynamic winemakers making the most of more affordable land and excellent growing conditions for organic wines. The climate tends to be a dry mediterranean one, with continental influence and a mountainous landscape to provide protection from inclement weather - ideal for minimal intervention farming. Domaine des Trouilleres produces gamay, chardonnay and pinot noir in this climate, on a tiny 5.8 ha situated between 380 - 500m altitude. This pocket size vineyard planted at 5,500 vines per ha makes only 35,000 bottles yearly, so we consider ourselves very lucky to get an allocation! In the winery, Mikael follows natural winemaking practices to complement the organic approach in the vineyard. This means no sulphur use during vinification, with a small amount only used during bottling. The resulting wines are honest, lively reflections of their volcanic terroir and highlight the dynamism of this young producer. LES ATHLETES DU VIN Loire Valley Sustainable and Organic farming “Les Athletes du Vin” is a collective of some of finest organic Loire Valley producers. Established in 2016, their objective is to make great value wines for wine lovers across the world, highlighting the appellations and grape varietals that contribute to the diversity and beauty of the Loire valley. Each of these producers have vineyards in all the corners of the Loire Valley region, they farm their vineyards and vinified each cuvee separately and collectively share the logistics and the sales of the wines. In true collective manner, they also share insights in to winemaking techniques, and seek feedback from each other on their wines. In fact, long lunches often accompany robust tastings - after all this is where their name comes from “Les Athletes du Vin”: the champion of the elbow rising (with moderation of course)! The ‘Athletes’ all share the same philosophy. Maximum care is taken with farming practices, which includes hand harvesting vines from 10 to 120 years old. In the winery, it’s all about minimal intervention, using natural yeast for fermentation, stainless steel, concrete and old oak along with minimum sulphur addition and light or no filtration depending of the cuvee. They aim to make delicious and real wine. What started as only 3 wines; a Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and a Pinot Noir is now a range of 15 wines including Touraine to Chinon, Grolleau and Pineau d’Aunis. Naturally, a group of dynamic winemakers were set on creating wine labels to reflect the spirit of their endeavours. And when the time came, only one name would do - Michel Tolmer. Who else than Tolmer, brilliant cartoon creator of ‘Mimi, Fifi et Glouglou’, and leading illustrator for the French “Natural Wine” movement. His style and imagination made him the perfect choice to capture each of the grapes and appellations of the Loire Valley. The collective of “Athletes” include: Gérald is based in Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil, where he makes AOC wines Cabernet Franc from Chinon and Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil. He also produces Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Pinot Noir from Touraine. Florent in the Saint-Pourçain area produces Chardonnay and Gamay, an area stylistically close to Beaujolais. Jean-Pierre in the Côte de Grand-Lieu in Muscadet area produces ‘Mumu-Chardonnay’, a blend of Melon de Bourgogne and Chardonnay. Jean-Marc and his mother run the show and farm 'their hill' together. The 9 hectares of vines and farm have been owned by the family since the early 1900s. Organic farming has been the norm here from 2007, certified biodynamic since 2010. camin larredya Jurancon, South-West France Organic and biodynamic certified Jurançon near the city of Pau is a special place for many reasons. It’s simply one of the most beautiful French vineyards, with steep slopes and scenic landscape, including the towering, often snow-covered, Pyrenees in the background. Jurançon is a pocket-size appellation of about 1,000 hectares farmed by 100 producers. Producing only white wine, it is historically known for late-harvest sweet wine or 'moelleux'. However dry white Jurançon wine was recognised with a separate AOC in 1975, known as 'Jurançon sec'. Dry Jurançon can be among the best whites you'll ever taste, particularly in the hands of a legend like Didier Dagueneau who helped to put Jurançon on the map. Today Jean-Marc Grussaute from Camin Larredya is one of the leading force and gaining plenty of fans among the sommelier community in France. Jean-Marc and his mother run the show and farm 'their hill' together. The 9 hectares of vines and farm have been owned by the family since the early 1900s, with most of the current vines were planted in 1970s by Jean-Marc’s father. Organic farming has been the norm here from 2007 onwards, certified in 2010 and turning to biodynmaic farming in 2016. The vineyard is classically local in varietal plantings: 65% Petit Manseng, 27% Gros Manseng, 8% Petit Courbu and Camaralet. The vineyard sits at 300m altitude, with soils of silica-clay and subsoils of puddingstone. Precision is life here, every action serves the "purpose of the terroir and its continuity", according to Jean-Marc, who respects the soil’s health and its life. It's essential for him that the roots go deep to express the terroirs in the final wine. Jean-Marc works the soils, grow cereals or pulses in between the rows, and uses natural compost when needed. The singularity and honesty of his wines come from permanent attention. "La Part Davant", or oriental part is a Jurançon Sec blend of Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng and some Petit Courbu. Skin contact at first, the must ferments with natural yeast, moving with the temperature of the cellar and vitality of the fermentation. Then fermentation and ageing on lees for at least 8 months in barrels and foudres. Ageing takes place in barrel and foudres, with batonage to snap the lees back in suspension. The wine is then left to rest and evolve in the cool cellars. Intense on the nose, with beautiful notes of white peach, yeasty and toasty character. On the palate, it's all about the lively texture and fleshy white fruits as well as orange and citrus notes, with an elegant driven acidity and long mineral finish.
