2016 Domaine de Brin, AOC Gaillac 'Amphore'

Appellation: AOC Gaillac (South-West France region)

 

Grapes: Braucol (60%), Duras (40%)

 

Farming: Organic (certified) and natural winemaking

 

Aromatics: Bright and expressive on the nose, fresh strawberries, sour cherries and floral notes. Subtle earthiness from the grapes.

 

Palate: Medium bodied, energetic red, lighter and brighter than most reds from the South-West. Smooth texture from the ageing in amphora, this wine made mostly of Braucol is Gamay-esque, yet retains its personality. Plenty of purity and freshness there with loads of red fruits. Lovely earthy finish.

 

About the wine: Clay and limestone terroir. Low yield. Hand-picked. In the winery, aged 6 months in tank and then 6 months in clay amphora, with no filtration and low sulphur at bottling. About 3000 bottles are produced each vintage.

 

When to drink: Now or in the next 5-6 years

 

Service: 14 degrees.

 

Food match: Pizza, Bolognese, charcuterie or veal.
