2014 Chateau Gombaude-Guillot Pomerol red

Appellation: AOC Pomerol (Bordeaux region)

Terroir: Clay-gravel soil with crasse de fer (iron-rich bands of sand)

Grapes: Merlot (85%), Cabernet Franc (15%)

Farming: Organic and Biodynamic

Aromatics: Pretty and elegant on the nose, red berries, plum and light toasted notes fallowed by charming sweet spice and fresh earthy aromas.

Palate: Structured and powerful this is a savoury and rich wine. Plenty of depth here, generous yet racy. The tannins are velvety and well integrated with the texture. The mid palate is filled with gorgeous red and black fruits, cherries and plum. Love the tension and the long finish.

About the wine: Cooler vintage somehow underated I think at the time. Right now this is perfect drinking Bordeaux!  Average age of the vines 40 years. Harvested by hand, the grapes are sorted, de-stemmed and lightly crushed. The wine undergoes natural fermentation in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless steel cuves for 3-4 weeks. Regular pumpovers at the beginning of fermentation (2-4 times a day). This cuvee is aged for 12 months in old french oak barrel, concrete tanks and clay amphoras. This wine is unfined, unfiltred. Low sulphur.

When to drink: Decant for 30-45 min and drink now or 8-10 years after vintage.

Service: 15 to 16 degrees C in Bordeaux glass.

Food match: Grilled meat dishes (beef or duck), grilled tuna dish or spatchcock in sauce.
